I had to write a research paper for english. My topic was emotional abuse. This is what I came up with. I'd like opinions. Thanks!

Emotional Abuse:
Invisible Crime

The phrase “domestic violence” brings to mind images of women, jails, and restraining orders but, in all actuality emotional abuse should come to mind. Emotional abuse leaves deeper, sharper, more painful cuts than physical abuse ever could, and the scars take much longer to fade. Emotional Abuse is an “Invisible crime” because it leaves no evidence on the abused and no “smoking gun” beside the abuser. I could write statistics for hours about the numbers of women, children, and yes, even men who are affected by this crime, but instead of numbers, I’m going to write about the people. I will write about how this crime hurts families, friends, and even casual acquaintances of the abuser and the abused.

Emotional abuse centers on mind control. Most abusers have no intention of ever tearing their victim apart; they just want control (The Emotionally Abused Woman). They make their victim feel inadequate, in essence, making the abuser the “master” of the victim.

The accusations and put downs are believed by the victim (The Emotionally Abused Woman). The victim’s sense of confidence is often totally destroyed. Victims usually require extensive therapy to recover from this. Victims lose all confidence and believe what is said about them (The Emotionally Abused Woman).

The statistics of those affected are startling. This crime is an epidemic. I’ve noticed in my research that the women and children that stated they were emotionally abused were the same that stated they were being beaten or sexually assaulted by the person who was abusing them. Emotional abuse is a gateway crime, and just like a gateway drug, it will lead to stronger and worse abuse. The reason for this is that most abuse (physical, sexual, and emotional) all coincide with the desire to control another. Nearly every child asked stated that they were a victim of emotional abuse (TCADSV).

It never ceases to amaze me how this is viewed as okay. Domestic violence is seen as a private thing. It is not. Sometimes what goes on behind closed doors shouldn’t be kept away from the eyes of the public. This is one of those times. Statistics state that if a bystander sees a man hit a woman they will do nothing. They may report it, but while he is hitting her, nothing will be done to help her. This is the same case, if not more so for emotional abuse. It is a cycle. Emotional abuse IS a crime. Emotional abuse IS wrong. Emotional abuse needs to be stopped.

Wow thats good. Heres my english paper XD
Its not edited yet though so yeah..

Swimming has been known since the times when people were first on this planet. This is known because in the “cave of swimmer” in Egypt has drawings of swimming. In the Middle Ages swimming was one of the seven agilities of knights. They had to be good swimmers as they had to swim fully armored. As the Middle Ages grew on the church became opposed to swimming. The first swimming association was made in 1603 in Japan and it declared that children should know how to swim. The first stroke was breaststroke; it was made in 1696 in France. In 1844 the London Olympics had swimming as an event. In this event the British used the commonly used breaststroke and some Native Americans used the un-commonly known freestyle. After the Native Americans destroying the British in the events, the British still swam breaststroke. The women were allowed to race in the first women’s championship in 1892 held in Scotland. Swimming has come a long way since 2500 BC but still has the same basic concepts and intentions.

In swimming there are many different strokes. Breaststroke was the first stroke, or at least it was the first stroke used in Europe. The breaststroke is a more relaxed stroke where you sweep out your arms as your hands move down and back. The hands then come back together under your chin; you breathe, and then do a frog like kick and repeat. Then, came the stroke known as Crawl or Freestyle. It is a stroke where you move your arms in a circular motion and kick your feet up and down. Freestyle is the most commonly used stroke and the fastest. Then there is the backstroke. Backstroke is like freestyle but on your back. It is nice because your face is always out of the water. Lastly is butterfly. Butterfly is the hardest stroke but with practice it is smooth and graceful. You do a dolphin like kick while using two hands you throw yourself out of the water and breathe. Then you dive back down under water and repeat. Some people also swim elementary backstroke and side stroke but those aren’t used in competitive swimming.

There are two types of racing pools. One is long course which is 50m or 164 ft. Another is 22m or 25m that is short course which is usually 75ft. There are 8 lanes used for races and each lane is 8ft wide. There are different even lengths in races. There at 50’s, 100’s, 200’s, 400’s, 800’s and 1500’s which in long course average from 1 to 30 lengths. In races they swim back, fly, breast, free and IM. IM is all the strokes starting out with fly then back then breast and lastly free.

Swimming is really good for your body. Some things it does for you if strengthen your mind and body, regulates your breathing, puts no stress on your joingts and also stimulates your circulation. Swimming also works on pretty much every muscle. Swimming is a very low impact exercise unlike other sports. The American Heart Association says that if you swim 30-60 minutes 3-4 days a week you can lower your risk of stroke, heart disease, diabetes and also lower your blood pressure and cholesterol. If you are trying to lose weight then swimming is one of the best aerobic workouts. Studies have found out that if you swim 1 hour you can burn up to 790 calories. That is 70 calories more than cycling and running. In swimming you don’t suffer as many injuries as other sports because you are floating so there is barley any pressure on your bones and joints. Not only does swimming build up muscles but it also reduces body fat. Some say that swimming like many other sports, isn’t just physical but you also you’re your mind to. You use it to average splits, count laps, thing of technique and many other things. All in all swimming is good for your mind, body and soul.

There is one swimming star that I would love to dedicate part of this paper to. This stars name is Michael Phelps. Michael stands at a tall 6’4” and 195lbs. He is currently 19 years old. He didn’t like swimming at first, but as he grew older he grew to like backstroke. He went to the Olympics at age 15 and took place in Sydney, Australia. In Japan he became the worlds youngest world record holder. He is a great role model for all!

In the past there have been many speedy world records set for men’s swimming. The 50 Freestyles record is held by Alexander Popor at a time of 21.64 and the 100 free was held by Nea Hoogenband at 47.84. Ian Thorpe holds records for the 200 and 400 frees at 1:44.06 and 3:40.0. Then comes Grant Hackett who holds the 800 and 1500 records at times of 7:38.65 and 14:35.56. The 50 back is held by Thomas Rupprath at 24.80. Aaron Peirsol is holding the 100 and 200 back stroke records with times of 53.17 and 1:54.66. The 50 breast is a 27.18 held by Oleg Lisogor. Rolanda Schoeman has a 22.92 in the 50 fly but Ian Crocker dominated the 100 at 50.40. Michael Phelps holds the 200 fly, 200 IM and 400 IM titles with 1:53.93, 1:55.94 and 4:08.26 times. There are the men’s world record holders.

EEEKKKKK! u are so much better at those things than i am!!!

thanks everyone.

I know this is so wrong, but I love writing essays. they're easy for me.

Okay.
I just rewrote it.

This is the final.

The phrase “domestic violence” brings to mind images of injuries, screams, and police cars but, in all actuality the emotional abuse that prefaces all of this should be what comes to mind. Emotional abuse leaves deeper, sharper, more painful cuts than physical abuse ever could, and the scars take much longer to fade. Emotional Abuse is an Invisible crime because it leaves no mark on the victim’s face and no smoking gun in the abuser’s hand. I could site statistics for hours about the numbers of women, children, and men who are affected by this crime, but instead of numbers, I’m going to write about the intense damage that is inflicted on the victims of emotional abuse

Emotional abuse centers on mind control(The Emotionally Abused Woman). Most abusers have no intention of permanently harming their victim; they want total control (The Emotionally Abused Woman). They make their victim feel inadequate, in essence, making the abuser the master of the victim.

The victim is under such a constant barrage of insults and accusations of worthlessness that their self confidence is diminished almost to the point of non-existence (The Emotionally Abused Woman). It is only through extensive mental therapy that it can be regained; however in some cases the victims are so emotionally damaged that it is nearly impossible to regain their sense of self worth. In these cases it is truly evident the scars this kind of abuse can leave a victim with.

The statistics of those affected by emotional abuse are startling, to the point that this crime has become an epidemic. I’ve noticed in my research that the victims that stated they were emotionally abused were the same that stated they were being beaten or sexually assaulted by the person who was abusing them. Emotional abuse is a gateway crime, and just like a gateway drug, it will lead to stronger and more dangerous abuse. The reason for this is that most abuse (physical, sexual, and emotional) all coincide with the desire to control another. Nearly every physically abused child when asked stated that they were also a victim of emotional abuse (TCADSV).

It never ceases to amaze me how some view domestic violence as a private matter. It isn’t. Sometimes what goes on behind closed doors shouldn’t be kept away from the eyes of the public. This is one of those times. Some statistics state that if a bystander sees a man hit a woman they will do nothing. They may report it, but while he is hitting her, nothing will be done to help her. This is the same case, if not more so. Emotional abuse may not cause the same physical scars as physical or sexual abuse, but the damage can be equally or even more sever. It is up to all of us to do whatever we can in order to see that it is brought to an end.

Shelby you are such a good writer!!!!!!!!

I'd post my Research Paper from last year, but it's over 30 pages long. It was the only thing we did in that class the whole semester.

You're all great writers! Just one piece of advice:

Never use the word I. State everything as if it's a fact.

So Sparx, instead of:
I will write about how this crime hurts families, friends, and even casual acquaintances of the abuser and the abused.

Write this: This crime hurts families, friends, and even casual acquaintences of the abuser and the abused.

Just a piece of advice unless your English teacher tells you the opposite. It's just what I was always taught.

Since I'm a HS English teacher I just wanted to back up the "lose the I's".. Your writing is very good, but since you asked I'd just add that the word I does not belong in this type of essay. I'm sure with your skill you can easily fix that up. Don't forget to double space and put the biblio. info on a separate page. Also anything directly from the research should be cited parenthetically.

Yes I was taught that too. She said that she wanted that in this one though. :confused3 It felt kindof weird to write it, but whatever makes her happy, I guess. ;)

That was very good Shelby! And also very good Kim! You two are such great writers!
