Well, hello, my UK friends....

DS and I are heading to your lovely neck of the woods during the first week of August with his soccer (excuse me, football) team. We will spend a few days in London, a few days in Chester, and then back to London in time to see the Community Shield game at Wembley on August 7th. There will be lots of 'parental free time' while the boys are having their training sessions.

So, what are the 'must sees' that you would recommend? I have never been to England, and we'll only be there 9 days. There are some organized sightseeing trips planned for us, but we will also have some free time as well.

Also, what can we expect (generally speaking) as far as the weather goes? Our soccer club has supplied a packing list for the boys (lots of training gear, full game kit, etc) but not so much for the parents.

I do appreciate any advice!

Hi cant help with Chester but for London heres a few ideas, take a "flight" on the London Eye, go to Madame Tussaurds wax museum, visit the London Dungeons - great fun, not scary. Take a look at, and go on board HMS Belfast moored just over the road from dungeons. Go to see a show, my DS14 and DS11 loved "We will Rock You" and are going to see "Billy Elliot" which I have seen and I know they will enjoy. Also check out www.theo2.co.uk to see if there is anything on then, Iron Maiden are there 5th and 6th August! Can recommend lots of West End shows, depends what you like really. Also you will have to see the sights, Buckingham Palace, London Bridge, Big Ben etc but I expect your organised tour does all that? Also just a thought have your DS soccer team looked into the David Beckham acadamy, located right outside the o2 arena, could be worth checking out the website? Hope this helps, have fun!

Also, the weather in August could be dry warm and sunny, could also be pouring with rain the whole time! :rotfl:

We're from just south of Boston, so the weather could be just like here! :lmao:

Thanks for the suggestions so far, this is great stuff.

Just thought of a few more things,

Shopping in Oxford Street, shopping at Harrods and/or Fortnum & Mason.
Afternoon tea at The Ritz, take a ride/tour on a red double decker London bus, travel in a black taxi, travel on the tube, take a boat trip on the Thames. Go on a duck tour -www.londonducktours.co.uk Visit the Tower of London, (home of the Crown Jewels) Lots of museums with free admission, British Museum, Natural History Museum, Imperial War Museum, Tate Gallery, many more - depends what stuff you like. Sit on a lion in Trafalgar Square! will keep thinking............

If you are used to rain you will be fine:rotfl:

Chester is just 10 miles away from me and a place that we visit at least once a month (normally near pay day!!). You could spend a whole day wandering round the Roman "walls", there is an open decked bus which shows you the sights and then, just outside Chester, is the zoo. Go for tea and scones in The Grosvenor Hotel in the city centre and the Cathedral is also worth a visit.

If you're staying in Chester for a few days you could plan a day trip to Liverpool - the city and the football club :)

If I were a visitor to London I would make sure I covered :
The London Eye
The Tower of London
Harrods of Knightsbridge
Tower Bridge
Hyde Park
Covent Garden

In theory the weather should be warm and dry around 22c, but like my fellow posters have said it could also rain for the whole 9days you're here :headache:

Hope you have a great time:thumbsup2

The David Beckham academy in Greenwich closed down at the end of 2009.
