Engagement Party, what would you serve??

Dh and I are having an Engagement Party for 2 close friends in Mid June. It will be approx. 25 Adults, evening, and my first Engagement Party. Couple is in their mid 30's. His and Her Friends...No Parents as most of family reside out of state....
I know I will need Champagne, wine, soda and beer. Menu/appetizer ideas??. I would like to do it all ahead of time. If need be I will rent equip to keep things warm. I will have to rent champagne flutes anyway.....I have always done meatballs, wings, for other parties. Also, do I get a cake? Do I need a theme?
I surely would appreciate any ideas, recipes, help with this party.

I have a couple of recipes for spectacular appetizers (cause I can't spell hor'deorves. They are time consuming, but can be done in advance. E-mail me if you want them. mceleri@netzero.net.

Otherwise a baked ham and turkey and some side dishes are always nice. A cake would be great. No theme is necessary but if you want to sprinkle some hearts around.
