Hello all!

Long time lurker, first time poster here...I thought I'd start it off with a bang! :yay:

So I'm planning to take my girlfriend down to WDW early next year and pop the question, and I'd love to hear some feedback and ideas from you guys!

Here's the information that I have so far:

  1. We're going to be staying at the Swan for 4 days/3 nights
  2. I booked a reservation at the Chef's Table at Victoria & Albert's on the first night (I was told by the woman on the reservation line that the seating is at 5pm)

Here are some ideas/questions that I'm still trying to figure out:

  1. I believe that Wishes will be on at 8 the night of the proposal. I really wanted to do something else after the dinner since the parks will be closed soon after and I feel that it would be anti-climatic to have the dinner and nothing else after. I REALLY wanted to try to book the Grand1 for a Wishes cruise. Do you think that this would be too much? If so, does anyone have any other ideas of what we could do after?
  2. Do you know who I can speak with about arranging everything for the proposal with the restaurant? Typically in these situations, would I tell them in advance what I'm trying to do, and would they work with me to plan it? Would I arrange something with them where I'd "make a trip to the bathroom" in which I'd really be giving someone the ring to get ready for after dessert?
  3. Should I arrange for a photographer to come out with the ring to take pictures of everything? Or does it make more sense to give one of the waiters my camera?
  4. On the subject of photos...I was trying to think if it makes sense to have an engagement photo shoot while we're there...but the only thing is that we'll only have 2 days after the proposal to do it (not enough time on the last day due to the flight home). Would it make sense to do this while we're still at WDW, or is this better to be saved for when we get home?
  5. I was thinking of trying to have Mickey and Minnie appear when the ring arrives...is this something that is typically arranged, or is it better to leave it out of the Chef's Table?
  6. I also wanted to have the room decorated upon our return that evening. Should I work with the Swan concierge for this...or should I work with the Disney Florist?
  7. Does anyone have any other ideas for any other activities that we can partake in to help "celebrate" this momentous occasion while we're there?

WOW...that's a lot! Thanks for reading everything! My brain is just full of a chaos of different ideas that I'd like to ultimately turn into action :wizard:

I have just ONE MORE question...I've been very sneaky so far.. :cool1: right now all my girlfriend knows is that we're going to be going away for an extended weekend getaway, but she thinks it's something local that we are driving too. I wanted her to at least be prepared and pack a bag...but she won't know where we're going until we get to the airport. Do you think that this is a good idea...do you have any suggestions on how to lay this down to her? Maybe spring up a few tips every now and then, or just not say anything until she arrives at the airport and sees her plane ticket? Anything else?

I really look forward to hearing back from all of you with your feedback and suggestions.

I hope that I can hear from some people that have similar experiences with ideas that they can share.

Thank you so much in advance..and I'm sorry for the long message!

Also...my apologies if I posted in the wrong forum. If I did, where should I post this?

Thanks again!

First of all congrats!! :goodvibes DFiance popped the question back in September in MK (in the Rose Garden) Disney is a great place to get engaged.. and be sure to get the "Just Engaged" pins.. we got lots of Congrats and even special "Congratulations" desserts at some restaurants... I think it helped us get great views at some of the restaurants (like Le Cellier and Coral Reef) but its not guarenteed. It was just nice to be acknowledged so much. CMs were wonderful.

I'm not sure.. but I will say.. DFiance and I did MK all day our first day.. he proposed at about 2 that afternoon and then we did more MK stuff and then Cali Grill.. back to MK for Spectro and then back to Cali Grill to the special viewing area for illuminations (and we also had to call everyone that we knew while we were doing this).. .. it was wonderful!! A day to remember forever.. BUT it was ALOT.. we slept in the next day and really didn't do alot that second day because we were so exhausted so just keep that in consideration.. you could always try another day for the cruise, but its up you guys.. we had tons of fun it was just a super long day

I would just tell your fiance to be to wait somewhere while you check in and do ask at the front desk.. you can order proposal packages from Disney Florist (flowers etc).. they are quite pricy but very nice
  3. Should I arrange for a photographer to come out with the ring to take pictures of everything? Or does it make more sense to give one of the waiters my camera?

DFiance proposed in front of a photopass photographer.. we got pics with my camera just normal and then he got down on one knee... it was wonderful (I knew ahead of time but still it was awesome) and its so great to have the photos now.. the photographer took like a million and he was so nice.. he took lots of great pictures and I would recommend having one come and take photos of the event.. I'm so glad to have them

You could.. although your fiance to be might have specific outfits and stuff she'd want to wear to something like that (or get her hair/makeup done) and not feel ready to do it. Photopass does photo sessions that you could schedule, but she might still want to do another one. Its up to you guys.
  5. I was thinking of trying to have Mickey and Minnie appear when the ring arrives...is this something that is typically arranged, or is it better to leave it out of the Chef's Table?

No idea. It's worth asking though.
  6. I also wanted to have the room decorated upon our return that evening. Should I work with the Swan concierge for this...or should I work with the Disney Florist?

    I'm not sure about this.
  7. Does anyone have any other ideas for any other activities that we can partake in to help "celebrate" this momentous occasion while we're there?

We took alot of photos with the photopass photographers (cause we got the photopass CD)... they took some really great pictures.. wear the pins!.. it sounds like you already have lots of great ideas for the trip

Do you think that this is a good idea...do you have any suggestions on how to lay this down to her? Maybe spring up a few tips every now and then, or just not say anything until she arrives at the airport and sees her plane ticket? Anything else?

You know her the best. I'm sure she'll be happy to be going to Disney! I would love a surprise trip like that!!

Good luck!! I'm sure she'll have a wonderful time, you put lots of thought into it! I'm so glad DFiance proposed in Disneyworld, I wouldn't have wanted to celebrate something like that anywhere else and it was such a magical trip :lovestruc I hope yours is just as wonderful!

Thanks for the feedback! I'm still working on all of the specifics, but I hope that some people will share some past experiences that will help spark up some ideas.

Does anyone have any suggestions in regards to those Chef Table specific questions?

Thanks!

Welcome and Congrats! My comments are in purple. :goodvibes
Hello all!

Long time lurker, first time poster here...I thought I'd start it off with a bang! :yay:

So I'm planning to take my girlfriend down to WDW early next year and pop the question, and I'd love to hear some feedback and ideas from you guys!

How exciting, I think Disney is the very best place to propose! But I could be biased, my DF proposed to me at Cinderella's Royal Table :goodvibes

When is the proposal, is it going to be at V&A's? I think that's a pretty long meal so you may not be done in time for a Wishes Cruise. I think no matter what, it will be a perfect night. Afterwards we went on our favorite rides at MK and it was just perfect, we actually even left before the fireworks. A wishes cruise would be really magical, or you can just find a spot at the GF or on the Poly Beach to watch them. You could also go to BW or DTD is the parks will be closed, or maybe EMH?

There definitely is a number you can call to do it at CRT, I'm not sure who you would call to do it at another restaurant, maybe you can contact the restaurant directly. You can also arrange a special presentation of the ring through Disney floral, like if you wanted a glass slipper or something like that.

  3. Should I arrange for a photographer to come out with the ring to take pictures of everything? Or does it make more sense to give one of the waiters my camera?
We had a photopass photographer there to take a bunch of pics and I am really glad we have these pictures now. Luckily I had pre-ordered the photopass cd, so we got all those pics.
We did have it scheduled for while we were there. It took less than two hours and it was great to be able to use the pics for Save the Dates. Disney is such a special place to us that it made sense to have them there rather than at home. If you do book something, it might be nice to arrange for hair and makeup for your DF so that she feels really pampered that day.
  5. I was thinking of trying to have Mickey and Minnie appear when the ring arrives...is this something that is typically arranged, or is it better to leave it out of the Chef's Table?
I don't think you can arrange to have the characters there during the proposal...but they could come afterwards to congratulate you but that costs a lot. I would just go to see Mickey and Minnie at some point during your trip. Definitely see Minnie, she loves to look at engagement rings and the interaction is really funny. You could even do a character breakfast the day after. We did a princess breakfast during our trip too and they were really cute, they all had something to say about the engagement :)
  6. I also wanted to have the room decorated upon our return that evening. Should I work with the Swan concierge for this...or should I work with the Disney Florist?
Probably Swan concierge, I'm not sure if Disney Floral could go in your room at the Swan. There's also another lady that delivers Disney gift baskets, I think her company is Baskets by Betsey or something like that
  7. Does anyone have any other ideas for any other activities that we can partake in to help "celebrate" this momentous occasion while we're there?
Get and wear engagement buttons. You will get so many congrats and people really make you feel special.

WOW...that's a lot! Thanks for reading everything! My brain is just full of a chaos of different ideas that I'd like to ultimately turn into action :wizard:
Aww, no matter what it will be perfect!

I like that it will be a secret until you get to the airport. I would give her clues on what to wear, since for V&A's you need to be pretty dressed up. If you're doing epics ask her to pack another nice outfit

I really look forward to hearing back from all of you with your feedback and suggestions.

I hope that I can hear from some people that have similar experiences with ideas that they can share.
I'll post a few pics of our proposal for you. I was very happy with Photopass and how it turned out.

Thank you so much in advance..and I'm sorry for the long message!

Thanks for your reply....I was planning on doing it while we're at dinner at the Chef's Table...I was thinking of having the dinner and then after (or before) dessert, they'd come out with the ring....great idea with the slipper!!!

Unfortunately, I'm starting to think that we won't have enough time to make the fireworks...I thought it would be perfect to have the dinner and proposal, and then go to the GF dock and take the Grand1 to watch the fireworks to celebrate...but it seems that the dinner and everything afterward would make it cut too close.

Besides the fireworks, is there anything else romantic that you can do at night after the parks close?

If I were to arrange for a photographer at Victoria and Alberts, and for engagement photos later on...would I do it through the same people? Is it photopass? Does anyone have any ideas on where a nice place is to have photos taken?

Where is the best place to have breakfast? Do you think the Cinderella Royal Table would be appropriate?

Where would I get the engagement buttons from? And do you think it's also appropriate to wear the bride and groom Mickey/Minnie ears, or is that really more for newlyweds and honeymoons?

Thanks again! Sorry for all of the questions...this is all still very new to me and I want to make sure it goes by perfectly :)

PS....I'd LOVE to see the pics!!

I'd try and contact them directly. Sometimes managers will be up for helping with proposals, although in the parks they don't really help in advance. I would check, especially since you are paying a lot for the meal. The "fancier" restaurants tend to like to help out with this kind of stuff.

The engagement buttons can come from a variety of places, although you can definitely get them at Guest Relations. Restaurants, stores and front desks have buttons too, but may not have the just engaged ones. You could wear the ears, although I think that would be more fun for a honeymoon!

You can do an engagement shoot through photopass or even one of the photographers listed through these boards. The Root couple does an engagement shoot as a part of a package for weddings, and Randy Chapman also does them. It depends what kind of quality you are looking for. You could always request a certain photographer through DPS (the Disney photopass photogs)!

I have no idea how to go about reserving a photopass photog for your dinner, I'm not even sure if they would offer it. A cheaper backup plan could always be to ask a server or give your camera to a manager.

After the parks close, you could go to Downtown Disney and walk around or head to one of the bars on property (California Grill, Artist Point, Narcoossee's) and have a drink and talk! Does the Swan and Dolphin participate in the EMH? The parks might be open until late and you could go celebrate at one of them.

If you have the money to do photo shoots and yachts, by all means go for it, but remember you can save money in the process by arranging things and end up saving the money for your wedding!

Well you asked for it, here are a bunch of pics from when we got engaged. :goodvibes

After a delicious dinner DF "went to the bathroom" to hand off the ring. Here's how they set it up.

Basically as soon as I saw them come out with the tray I got really emotional

and of course I said yes!

And afterwards we took a few more pics and they brought out our special dessert.

I know there's a lot of pics in there, but just to give you an idea and they took way more. They took a ton of the ring before they brought it out which was nice.

Now I can answer your questions. :)
Thanks for your reply....I was planning on doing it while we're at dinner at the Chef's Table...I was thinking of having the dinner and then after (or before) dessert, they'd come out with the ring....great idea with the slipper!!!

I'm sure that will be great. I've heard V&A's is amazing. I'm sure they can definitely set up something similar with you. They brought out my ring right before dessert and our server said "your prince has ordered a special dessert for you"

I totally agree, it would be cutting it too close, but you will already have had an amazing experience at V&A's, so it may have been too much with the cruise right after. If you really wanted to you could keep that as a surprise for later in the trip or maybe they will extend the MK Wishes Dessert Party, I think Wishes is best in the park. You could schedule an Illuminations cruise later on, or try to eat dinner at Rose&Crown during illuminations and maybe you can get an outside table. We did one year and it was fantastic!

Besides the fireworks, is there anything else romantic that you can do at night after the parks close?
You could just walk around the Grand Floridian, sit by the Beach, the resort is so pretty at night. You could go to the Boardwalk, Jelly Rolls is really fun.

If I were to arrange for a photographer at Victoria and Alberts, and for engagement photos later on...would I do it through the same people? Is it photopass? Does anyone have any ideas on where a nice place is to have photos taken?
I liked having the photopass people because their camera is much better than mine or DF's. You definitely could, or you could do an in park shoot with DPS or use an outside photographer.

We did separate engagement pics with our wedding photographers. We actually booked it before we were sure we were going to use them for the wedding. You can definitely book a separate engagement session with them or any local photographer. You can see some of the pics here http://rootphotography.blogspot.com/2009/10/sara-ryan-engagement.html

Where is the best place to have breakfast? Do you think the Cinderella Royal Table would be appropriate?
I think that would be really fun. If you can't get it though, since that is a hot ticket, you could do Tusker House at AK (my fav), or Cape May at Beach Club which is close to wear you're staying.

Where would I get the engagement buttons from? And do you think it's also appropriate to wear the bride and groom Mickey/Minnie ears, or is that really more for newlyweds and honeymoons?Front Desk at the GF definitely has them. I would save the ears for a honeymoon, but we're having our wedding there so I'm going to wear them then. We got plenty of attention just with the pins. You can also add a note to all your ADRs.

Thanks again! Sorry for all of the questions...this is all still very new to me and I want to make sure it goes by perfectly :)
You're very welcome, your GF is going to be so excited!
PS....I'd LOVE to see the pics!!

Thanks for sharing your pics...they came out wonderful! Looks like you guys had a great time! :)

So I called up and booked us a reservation for the Character Breakfast at Cinderella's Royal Table the following morning. The lady on the phone was very nice and even gave me the number for the photographer and engagements/proposals. I was thinking maybe I can see if something can be set up for the Chef's Table dinner where they bring out the slipper and have a few photos taken of that (maybe photopass), and then maybe we can have the real photo session take place right after breakfast the following morning.

I just looked up the Boardwalk and I had no idea that this even existed...and I've been to WDW 9 times!!! Jelly Rolls looks like something that'd be a lot of fun! I read that the Boardwalk is close to Swan...do you know how far it is walking distance?

Thanks again for all of the great suggestions! It looks like this is starting to come together :)

Does anyone know how you would reserve a photopass photog (I only got the number for the professional photographers)? How much do these typically cost?

Swan is a very short walk from Boardwalk. There's a very romantic path all the way around the lake with Boardwalk, Swan and Dolphin, and the Yacht and Beach Club. I'm going to be at the YC 1/4 - 1/11. Any of those 5 hotels are great because it is such a short walk to MGM (I'm old school) and EPCOT. Have you booked your hotel yet? Seen the special rates from Travelzoo: swandolphin.com/offers/zoo (Can't post links yet, sorry)

I actually booked the hotel already and got a nice discount on it...but thank you very much for the gesture!

I find it funny that I've never known about this whole other section of WDW...I guess you're always finding something new there. I've been there a bunch of times, but I've always stayed at the All Star Resorts and stopped by to visit Grand Floridian and Poly.

How long does it typically take to walk from the Swan to Boardwalk and from Swan to MGM (I'm also old school) and Epcot?

You're welcome! :goodvibes Thanks so much, it really was magical and I'm sure your proposal will be the same. Jellyrolls is so fun, it's a dueling pianos bar and you can request different songs. I'm sure they would even pull you up on stage if you told them you just got engaged. I know it's definitely within walking distance, I would say no more than 10 minutes, but I've never been to the Swan.

That's awesome that you were able to get CRT! Breakfast is a hard meal to get there, things are definitely going your way. :cutie: We had breakfast with the Princesses in Epcot after we got engaged and it was so fun. They all had something to say about it and oooo'ed and ahhhed over my ring. Be sure to go see Minnie at some point too, she also makes a big deal about the ring and also gets annoyed at a certain mouse since he still hasn't given her one. :rotfl:

I'm not sure how much the photopass photographers would cost...I imagine it wouldn't be too much since you'd still have to purchase the pics, but you never know with Disney. Maybe try calling V&A's and see if they can point you in the right direction? I'm sure they can arrange it with the slipper and everything too.

By all accounts V&A's is romantic but the Chef's table is in the kitchen and is not exactly a romantic location with low warm dreamy lighting suitable for a proposal. Is your future fiance a super foodie and will be super excited to be seated in the kitchen for a "feed me" style dinner? If she isn't a super foodie you may want to reconsider proposing in a noisy kitchen vs rebooking for a romantic table for two in the main dining room.

This is something that I've read about in reviews...where people would weigh out the Chef's Table vs the main dining room...however, this was something that we both wanted to experience together, and I thought it would be appropriate.

Also, I liked the idea of us sitting in our own area in the restaurant, wouldn't that be a more intimate experience?

As a big time foodie I would love to be proposed to at the chef's table, but there is also something special about being proposed to in a romantic setting. Only you can decide which looks more appropriate.

Thank you for posting those pictures! It's funny I think I've seen more photos of the chef's table than the main dining area...and the main dining area looks very romantic. I think that having dinner in the main dining area would be very nice but I might still stick with the Chef's Table for this instance only because I think it might be more appropriate for the proposal...being in that area by ourselves. I know that the cooks will be right near us, but I think she'd like the idea of being catered to as we're watching them make our dinner. Plus it seems like you receive a much more personalized meal.

Does anyone know if the Chef does anything special if there is a proposal going on at the table that evening?

Chef's Table is difficult to get. But if he can swing it, sure. V&A has a separate reservation line apart from WDW-DINE. They can probably help him with the proposal.

But the restaurant DOES call to confirm your reservation a week or so before the trip, so if he wants it to be a surprise dining experience, he better leave a cell phone number.

I don't think Disney Florist can do in-room at the Swan. It's up to the Swan's management, aka Starwood.

(I got this from a more experienced DISer.)

Def. have Wishes Fireworks on the list if she is a really big Disney Romance Person. I know I'd love it being a huge Disney Romance Person myself. I love how it has to do with dreams coming true. Best time to share your love:lovestruc

More chiming in from friends on the Dining Boards...

Oh my. I would say no to a proposal at the Chefs Table unless he's marrying a real foodie. While the experience is amazing, the kitchen isn't the most romantic place for a wedding proposal. The dining room is much more elegant ... hushed (unless I'm there with my friends) with a harpist playing romantic music (unless I'm making a request). He can speak with Israel (the sommelier) to help set thing up - I think that would be the best person to contact.

The Grand 1 seems a bit much after V&A ... it's hard to tell when they will leave the restauant without knowing what time their dinner is scheduled for. We had a 5:15 seating and didn't leave until 11pm ... granted that was because we were having too much fun, but I'm just saying it can take longer than they might think it would.

Don't know about photopass; we've always had good luck ordering through WDWFlorist - they will deliver to anywhere on Disney property from what I understand.

Hope this helps!
