Engagement gift?

What kind of gift do you give to a friend who just got engaged? I've never really done engagement gifts in the past, but would like to this time. Any suggestions?

A bride book. It's like a baby book but it has pages for "When he proposed we did this..."
"These people were at our engagement party"
"When we asked David to be the best man, he said..."

etc

It's a nice gift.

Also a bottle of champagne if you don't know them well.

I don't do engagement gifts... I know I got engaged over 20 years ago and didn't get any gifts for it. Is this something we are supposed to be doing now a days? I guess I am behind the times!

I don't think a gift is necessary, but when I got engaged a friend of my parents gave us two wine glasses with the date and the initial of his last name etched into them.

I got rid of the husband after 15 years and still have the glasses. Fortunately, his last name and my last name begin with the same letter.
