End of the year teacher gifts

What is an appropriate amount for an end of year teacher's gift for grade school? I made each of DS4 and DS6's preschool/kindergarten teachers one of the little trendy "Capri Sun" pouch purses, put six Lindor chocolates in each and a $20 Target gift certificate.

But next year DS6 will attend public 1st grade. Should I go higher on the gift certificate, or lower????

UGH! I knew that I should have sent the gifts in today! My DD's teacher was in class this morning, but had to leave suddenly to go have her baby. Julia weighed in over 10 lbs.

So, I guess now we'll be calling and stopping by her house once she's back and settled. I was planning to make a quilt, too, for the baby, so we'll have two excuses to drop in on her.

Luckily, she's also friends with our family members, so it isn't too far out of line for us to go to her house.

BTW, I'd usually keep gifts to between $20 - 30, depending on how much we liked the teacher.

We gave gifts to all my teachers through middle school, at both Christmas and the end of the year. Once I hit high school, it became a little different, because by the end of the year some of my teachers still barely knew me. In elementary/middle school though, I had no more than 3 teachers at any one time, so they knew nearly everything about me, and the teachers really got close to ALL of us. They truly were another set of parents. High school is another story. That being said my Latin teacher will get one heck of a gift at the end of next year-since she will have survived 4 years of teaching me, and she's one heck of a person. She reminds me a lot of the teachers I had in grade school.
We usually gave candles, chocolates, ornaments (at X-mas), coffee, mugs, or just about anything else. I think one year we even gave wind chimes. We never gave gift certificates because my mom felt that they were always too impersonal. BUt that's just her. When I decide on gifts GC's are what I get cuz they're quick, easy, and I can be out of the mall in a flash.

I always send in a gift for the teacher at the end of the year. To me, it takes a special person to be a teacher. I'd like them to know that.

I am going to go broke getting end of the year gifts.
I have twins and they have
1 kindergarten teacher, 4 classroom aides, a Spanish , Technology, PE, Music, Art, Speach, not to mention the nurse, and libarian, let alone the princpal, and the secretary...oh and almost forgot the bus driver.

This is a very wealthy school, and may times I feel intimidated by the amount of money I see other parents spending....I cannot even afford the $150 it will cost me if I get everyone a $10 gift or certificate. Let alone $300 for $20 gifts.

I picked up a couple of those Fondue Kits at Joanne's..they were really cute. I am thinking about getting GC like Target or Dunkin Doughnuts....I am keeping my eye out for other good suggestions.

DS painted a mug at one of those pottery painting places near the school. It came out very nice in the school colors and the teacher's name on it. I included a jar of coffee beans with the mug.

I am giving the kids teachers Gift Certificates for Dunkin Donuts/Baskin Robbins. They can spoil themselves with some great coffees or have some yummy ice cream and relax. For the Sunday school teachers I generally get notepads from AC Moore and new Pens and wrap them with a pretty ribbon. Both kids have more than one teacher, so I try to do something small, and yet let them know how very much they are appreciated.

I don't know if it's 'appropriate', but I picked up a $25 GC tonight at Dress Barn. I will probably keep at that amount for several years to come. ;)
