Does anybody buy end of the year gifts for your children's teachers? I just told my mother that I bought a gift certificate for my daughter's teacher and she flamed me telling me I should not have done that. I was really just trying to show appreciation. What are your thought on gifts for teachers?

I just posted a couple days ago on what I should get my DS's teacher, so you betcha I give a gift to the woman who spends 7 hours a day 5 days a week with my son.

I always have. This year for my twins prechool teachers, ive gotten some italian link bracelets on ebay with a few charms, I think they will like them, if not I do, im working on number 3 for me and I think 4 for DD:faint: Im addicted to the foolish things,

I just did a search and found that MANY people do end of the year gifts. I feel better now. I knew I came to the right place to get piece of mind!! Thanks so much!!

Got my daughter's kindergarden teacher some lotion from Bath and Body Works. The same applys for my other daughter's daycare teacher.

FWIW, My wife is a teacher, and she has only received 2 gifts so far, and the last day of school is today. She usually gets more before Christmas break than the end of school.

Yes I do buy gifts for the teachers. I think that was a very nice thought of you doing that for your child's teacher. Teachers are unpaid and they do alot for our kids so when they recieve something like a gift, most teachers don't expect anything but are very appreciative. It shows them that they are thought of for all their hard work.

I think it's a great gesture :) Most teachers work really hard and I'm sure any show of appreciation is greatly appreciated :)

My DD's class took up a collection. You didn't have to give, but all the parents did. We each gave $10 and took the money and the "class mother's" bought the teacher and the teachers aide gift certificates for a local restaurant. This is for kindergarten teachers.

When DD was in preschool, we did the same thing.

I would have bought my own gift if a collection wasn't made. I couldn't imagine not doing something to show my appreciation of their hard work.

Hi,
I'm a teacher and I really appreciate gift certificates. Last week I received several gift certificates plus a beautiful Mickey watch!
It's a nice thank you.:)

My feelings exactly, oogieboogie! ::yes::

We got each teacher a bottle of sun block and lip balm with
block. our intention was to say, "have a great summer!"

I started a similar thread a couple of weeks ago. I ended up getting one a Barnes and Noble gift card and the other two Target gift cards. I'm glad I did because DH was a room parent for one class and volunteered a lot for another so HE came home from the last day of school with gifts from the teachers!

When I taught school, I loved getting gifts:p Especially GCs.

This year, for my sons' teachers, I bought an apron and had each child in the class dip their hand in paint and create a handprint which I labeled with their name on the apron. Then I filled the pockets with things that teachers need on the spur of the moment, like bandaids, Sharpies, antibacterial hand sanitizer, dry erase markers, kleenex, etc.

Turned out pretty cute, except when I heat set it and then washed it, the lining started coming out of the pockets. I had to hot glue the lining together since I am "sewing challenged".

Moral of the story: Buy a quality apron, not one from Hobby Lobby, when giving as a gift.

I'm giving one of my high school teachers a scented wax dipped bear (or cat or dog)...my mom makes them, and they smell sooo good and they're cute too...

Im also going to get her an "edward scissorhands" poster because i know she loves that movie and she has tons of posters in her room...plus i like that movie too , and when i go into her room i can see johnny all the time :)

I've always given gifts to teachers, babysitters, and what not... they are caring for our most precious gift -- our children! This year is my oldes dd's last year in preschool -- the parents are giving a class gift of a painted bookcase with the kids' handprints on it, with new books donated from all the families. It's turning out so cute... What is sad though, is that we're having some trouble getting ALL the kids handprints b/c some parents just don't seem to have the time to bother... we will get them tho! I will also give separate gifts... not sure what though -- we just gave restaurant gift certificates for teacher's appreciation week in early May.

There are so many perks involved in teaching....Where else do you get summers off, thoughtful gifts and the adoration of little angels?

Most appreciated by myself are gift certificates for books stores or Target/Walmart. Unfortunately, school budgets are often limited, and we spend a lot of $ on classroom supplies.

I had enough Bath and Body products and Candles to start my own shop. (Seriously...They must be the #1 and # 2 teacher gifts)
Instead of starting a shop, I donated the gifts. :D

minmate, What a great idea! I love it!

We bought nice crystal platters for both teachers. They have dahlias painted on them. I try to stay away from the traditional teacher gifts like cologne, lotion and candles. At least they are something that they can enjoy themselves or regift to someone else because they don't scream, "teacher's gift."

We did the bookcase thing for my DD's teacher for a baby shower in the classroom. A few of us chipped in for the bookcase and everyone donated books for the new baby. The teacher really liked and appreciated that.

I hope they're not! (I know you mean underpaid);)

Just this morning I had my DD ask her teacher right out which kind of store would she like a GC from. She told her a book store or Dress Barn. Makes my shopping easier. ;)

What about for a 1st grade guy teacher?? Having hard time w/ that one! I was thinking a GC to Sports Authority or for Borders/Barnes and Noble.

Oh and for all of you sending cards to those teachers to include w/ the lovely gifts...please remember "a lot" is two words not one! Wouldn't want that teacher to cringe when she/he reads the word "alot!" I know I cringe when I see it!!!!

From writing101.com

This would have to be the most commonly misused example of what I'm talking about. There are two words (count 'em ... 1 ....2 ...) in a lot. You wouldn't dream of writing, 'I'm just going for alittle walk," so it's a constant source of mystery to me why so many people insist on writing, "I've got alot to do today."

Just my little pet peeve......
