End of the penny....

The government made its last order of penny blanks earlier this month, a spokesperson for the Treasury Department confirmed to BI. The US Mint will keep manufacturing the one-cent coins until it runs out of blanks, they said, meaning the penny will gradually fall out of circulation.







It costs 3 cents to make a penny, buuuut it costs 14 cents to make a nickel

....so the quandary is... will we no longer purchase items because they are not 99 cents.. never understood that marketing ploy... should be a poll...why won't you purchase an item that is a dollar?....

LOL. Use a penny or nickel three times, they've paid for themselves . I guess I will have to make sure to dig a few out of my penny jar every time I go shopping. No way I am allowing a merchant to round up my purchase, I will have exact change.

I think the demise of the penny has been talked about almost as long as the transition to RealID. At least it seems that way!

Poor timing on my part - cashed in every bit of change in this house yesterday to throw into my vacation savings account. Pennies will

They have been phasing out pennies in Canada in years. I remember being in the Maritimes in 2017 and merchants were rounding to the nearest nickel. It sounds like a bookkeeping nightmare, you would never balance, but they must n e able to make it work.

I am all for ending the penny. I once thought this would eventually result in a loss for companies, but I read that rounding up and down eventually cancel each other out. Down with the penny.

Casinos here in Arizona are doing away with kiosk coins.. they ask you to donate to choice of 4 local charities..if not.. they print out a slip.. which if you save enough can be inserted into slot for play... so they may very well have a machine at the cage...or maybe a round up or down at the 49/50 cents mark

LOL. Just finished a $50,000 home improvement project. Got three bids, none of the contractors took anything other than cash or check.

I've been rounding up or down for no loose change back. Some businesses also have been rounding up when returning change i.e. supposed to get $13.75 back, they give me $14. Most of my transactions are now digital because more and more businesses are going cashless.

Can you give some examples of business going cashless... because here on the border that is not happening nor can it.. thank you... however folks are shocked at my farmers market venue that I am cash only

For our area, Crumbl, Rocket Fizz, Area 15, etc. are cashless. Our recent trip to Disneyland in January we brought cash and almost every kiosk was cashless. On the flip of that Winco only accepts cash & debit cards - no credit cards. They'll only take apple pay if it's an emergency type situation where you don't have any other form of payment. Casinos are testing cashless technology as well.

So in my senior citizen ignorance and rebellion.. other than WinCo...do your above companies..none of which I recognize..cater to younger generations... because I still see many senior citizens pulling large amounts of cash from banks at beginning of the month...my thought is that the great depression is still a barrier

The Royal Mint here in Canada stopped producing pennies in May 2012 and the govt started pulling them out of circulation in early 2013. I don't know anyone here who misses the penny.

...so that is the rub....a younger generation has no concept of cash... I never saw a sign here in Yuma while purchasing my weekly allowance of Soma cookies that other forms were available and the collection jar was full of cash and the Disneyland makes sense...who leaves home with out a card
