End of Disney Dollars

Does anyone know if the $10s that are available are all the same or is it possible there are different characters on the bills?

Sad. Before trips my kids would earn mickey bucks. The amount earned I would get them mickey bucks in the park and that is what they could spend on souvenirs. Made it more fun and they tried super hard to earn them. That was just another little thing that added magic to the trip.

I intended to get a few of these for my granddaughters 1st trip next year. Does anyone know if they are all gone now?

I just called and was told they cannot ship them to you. You have to buy them in stores (if any are left over) or be at the parks.

After calling the regular Disney number 407 WDISNEY, and being told they couldn't ship them to me, I found another number to call: (407) 566-4985

I called and was told there was a 73 minute wait but a rep answered after 48 mins (I just put my phone on speaker and laid it down while I surfed the web). She did say there are only $10 denominations left and what you get is random (they don't know what characters are on them). You can order $50 worth at a time on a credit/debit card and use up to 3 diff credit/debit cards for a total of $150 in Disney Dollars. The $15 shipping charge is because they require Signature Delivery. I didnt ask if it was $15 per order of $50 but I assume it is.

I got $50 for my granddaughter and also had a DIS'er help me out with some as well (very thankful). These will be cool keepsakes for her for sure! If not for these boards I'd have never known they were being discontinued!

Obviously there are all kinds available on ebay at a stiff price. Does anyone know a way to distinguish real from counterfeit? Does the paper feel like regular paper? I can't imagine them using any kind of fiber blend. Does it have any security features? Look, feel, markings, etc??

All the times I went and never bought any. I might have to gt a couple 10s if they will ship.

Mine don't feel like plain paper. I'm not 100% but I would guess it's linen/cotton. The lettering and designs have a raised feel, like engraving rather than plain printing. And there's a line of glitter-like sparkles down the bill to the left of the center picture. I don't know if they all are like that. The ones I checked are from 2008 and 2009.

I picked up two $10 bills from guest relations today. They only had $10 denominations left and the CM said that they were the only ones who had them left.

I'm sad to see these go. I only used them once but was looking forward to getting them for my kids next year when we go next year. I know some people think they are a waste because of the magic bands, but I can tell you that my kids never ask to swipe my card at the store...they ask to have a couple of dollars to spend. I always give them cash. And they would have loved to have Disney dollars to spend at the parks. It would have been special. I think this is something where Disney is missing the mark in order to push more tech. I read in responses to the article on the main page that someone said he's glad they're gone because he can't stand waiting in line while someone pays cash. I understand where he is coming from, but he obviously has never been behind someone who couldn't figure out technology. I worked in retail and grocery for many years and found that cash was sometimes faster than a card. I can't tell you how many times someone swipes their card the wrong way or forgets their pin...not to mention how many times networks crash and cash is all we could take. I'm sure the same happens with Magic bands. That has to be a miserable experience for someone in a rush. But Disney dollars (or just plain cash) would be a much better asset to them at that point. Anyway, I'm just sad that these things are gone. Disney may not think it's necessary, but with everything else they have done to make the place more expensive you'd think they'd let people buy Disney dollars of which they might not spend all and they make more money in the long run!

As much as we enjoy DD, and we have used them since the first trip we took my DGD on over 10 years ago, this is one cutback that I think makes sense as far as Disney is concerned. They are wicked expensive to print and maintain, because they are treated as currency. WHen you consider the counterfeiting that may occur, well that adds to the actual cost. Much like the pennies that the Fed has been trying to get rid of for years, they probaby cost more than they are worth now, and even when you consider those tucked away in jars, the cost probaly exceeds their value.

I am so glad that I had asked my friend to pick some up for me on her trip because I have gifted kids with them dollars for years, and would have felt terrible if I did not give some to my nephews for their first trip.

Ex-H always called them Disney's license to print money, since most people collected them as souvenirs rather than use them for currency.

Once at DL in the late 90s, a gift shop CM automatically gave us change in Disney Dollars, and we had to specifically request U.S. dollars. I thought it worked the other way around; you needed to ask for the Disney money.

I'm surprised they never printed a $100 Disney bill. I'm sure many people would have bought it as a souvenir.

I think Six Flags tried their version of funny money for a while too.

We'd book our trip several months or more out and to build excitement and save up some spending money I would periodically buy Disney Dollars and then hide them in different places in the time before our trip. For example I might leave a note with some Disney Dollars in my wife's lunch that she made for work or place a few in the nightly newspaper. It was especially fun to do if she had a bad day at work to have her come home and find these to remind us of our upcoming trip. It also added up to a tidy sum of spending money once our trip actually rolled around. But then we lost our local Disney store so that kind of put an end to our use of Disney Dollars some time ago anyway. I can see why they have discontinued them as they quickly became a novelty in the electronic age.

Actually they can't claim them as income until its actually spent so in other words I think they appear as some sort of a liability on their books.

Not sure if there is some sort expiration time limit where they can then move it over as income.

ETA: I just looked it up and its called breakage. If a card has an expiration date (which I think in a lot of states is illegal) its easy to figure out. If it doesn't, like Disney Dollars, its much trickier.

I got my $10s that I ordered. All of them have Stitch. Did anyone get anything different? I am a bit disappointed. I was hoping for a Mickey or one of the 5 Fab.

I just got mine, too, this afternoon and all of them have Stitch on the front. When I called, I was told they would choose different ones. Let's just say I am SO not a Stitch fan! I'll bet they had a lot of those left over. Disappointed, too!

My DD is 3 and I was hoping to get her one that she knew who the character was... I guess we will have to learn about Stitch.

I vaguely remember Disney dollars, but the only "funny money" I seem to have saved are Toys R Us dollars. Geoffrey the Giraffe is on the $10, his wife (Gertrude?) is on the 5, and Baby Geoffrey (I think) is the $1.

In my mind, I can picture Goofy on Disney dollars.
