Last time I saw it the only thing that could scare a 3 year old might be the fake thunder and lightning parts. Otherwise, I think talking birds should be okay. Maybe you can let the kiddo before you go that there is going to be some pretend thunder & lightning.
It gets dark and there's thunder and lightning effects, plus the goddess
"Polynesia" (animatronic figure) has glowing eyes, but that's about as threatening as the effects get.
It can also be loud, but its not a particularly frightening attraction.
But only YOU know how skittish your child can be in unfamiliar surroundings.
Not for a 3-year-old but as for myself, it took every ounce of self control to refrain from running out of the room screaming. I know many people love it, but this has to be my LEAST favorite attraction in WDW
My DD loved this show when she was two and she tends to be a very cautious child and scares easily. Just explain that there will be loud noises and your 3 yr old should be fine. However I do not like how they have changed the show. Zazu and Iago are cute but the show is much shorter than it used to be (at least it seems that way to me). I'm glad DL hasn't changed their's yet and I can see the original again.
My 2yr old DS was terrified in this show and I had to run out in the middle of it w/him. I forgot they changed the show. It's ashame because he would have loved the old show.
This was one of my 26 month old DD's favorite attraction when we were there last week. She loved it and danced along with the music, but she does tend to be amused by things other kids find scary.
