Why does everything have to be about politics?

It doesn't. You missed the original unedited post from the OP. A slightly politically incorrect comment has since been deleted.

Also, any time one is dealing with the government (which is who administers passports) a tiny fly in the ointment leads to lots of beauracratic red tape which can be very frustrating and makes people angry at our government.

But if you don't have a passport, will you be able to get off the ship when it pulls into port or do you have to remain on there?

In 2009 there are no ports that DCL goes to that require anyone to have a passport to go there. Also, if you need to leave the cruise early and fly home there are proceedures in place for emergency repatriation so you are not going to be "stuck" in another country and not able to return to the US.

Since the original concern of this thread has been addressed it is being closed. Please remember that political discussions are not permitted on the DIS boards.

Yes, you can still get off at the ports.
Closed loop cruises are the only exception to needing a passport to enter back into the US. Closed loop means you return to the same port you embark from.

The only problem is if you don't return back to the US the same way you left, on the ship.
Say in case of illness w/helicopter lift off the ship.
