I need a gas mask!

One, or maybe all 3, of our male dogs decided to pee on the living room carpet. There wasn't anyone home to know for sure which of the dogs it was.

DH got home before me, and bless his heart for trying, got out the carpet shampooer, sprayed the area with hot tap water, let it sit and then shampooed the area.

His heart was in the right place but he used the wrong technique. Now a larger area of the carpet was wet and it still smelled like pee.

So, he got out a bottle of vinegar and poured it over the entire wet area. I should qualify that, he saturated the wet pee smelling carpet with vinegar.

He then used the shampooer to pull the vinegar out of the carpet. It still smelled so he put shampoo back in the shampooer and shampooed it again.

It still smelled so he filled the shampooer with vinegar and ran it over the area.

That's about the time I got home. I may have to leave again.

Like I said, bless his heart for trying but ACK! It stinks bad. I smell pee, vinegar and carpet shampoo plus the carpet is soggy. Not good.

At this point I really don't know what to do, except take the carpet shampooer away from him. But the smell?

good luck. My dog had a blowout in DD17s bedroom last year and let's jist say, I have about 800 sq.ft. of new carpet now. You have my sympathy.

I wanted to get Nature's Miracle. I've heard really good things about it. DH wanted to go the cheap route. Do you think with all the vinegar and the carpet shampoo that it's too late for using Nature's Miracle?

Hate to say it but I'd be getting out my carpet knife and tearing it out before it gets into the sub floor. Sorry, I hate those smell issues. I'd be in a hotel for the night and ordering new carpet in the morning. Then, find a way to keep the dogs out of that room.

Odo-ban. Get the gallon jug of concentrated stuff, not the spray bottle. (I get mine from sams club - a jug lasts forever)


1) Get lots of old towels and lay them on top of the wet carpet. Walk around on said towels to get as much moister up as possible.

2) Saturate any currently wet areas with the Odo ban (read the directions for proper dilution). (Must get the cleaner down to the padding)

3) Repeat the old towel blotting method.

4) put a fan in the room to help dry things up.

IMO Odo-ban works way better than natures miracle.

But if all that is already in the sub floor, not sure if even the odo-ban will help.

YES. Suck up as much of the water as you can with the carpet shampooer, and then saturate the area with nature's miracle. Let it air dry.

Do you have any Oxyclean? It is my all time favorite cleaner and breaks down just about anything but cat urine & chocolate. Oxyclean can't be mixed with Bleach, on the opposite side of vinegar for the PH so you should be fine. I would mix a bucket, pour it over the mess then soak it back up again before the urine smell can seep into the wood floorboards. You may have to air the room out for a little bit but it dissipates fairly quickly, by morning the smell should be gone. The stuff is amazing. OK, I just did a search and Oxyclean + vinegar is recommended for stubbornly dirty cloth baby diapers so maybe it's the perfect combo, could be he helped you.

If you don't have that some good old fashioned Arm & Hammer baking soda mixed with water should be able to neutralize the PH of the vinegar and help with the smell.

No, its not too late to use the nature's miracle. When we were gone for christmas vacation my house sitter closed the door to where the litter boxes were and my cat peed on my chaise. Microfiber, no cushion... it sat there for a week. I had to dump around a half gallon on it (in total) I treated the chair three times, but the smell came out.

Just spend the money to get the carpets cleaned.

Our dog had a blowout - both #1 and #2 on the carpet. We tried many things, including Nature's Miracle with Oxyclean. We realized we need to bring in the "big guns".

We got yelled at using a product with oxiclean in it - cuz sometimes when you use that - even the Pro's can't help out.

The carpets look great though!

I have nothing to add, except that I'm jealous because your DH sounds awesome for trying! Mine would text me that I might notice a problem that I'd have to take care of when I got home!

I'm Queen of dog deposits at my house! If it comes out of the dog in the house, my family runs and pretends not to notice until I get home. "Hi Mom! Do you smell something?"

Yep - your husband is an awesome guy. He put his heart into it!

My suggestion is a big production, but it worked for me when our carpet got soaked by a leaky pipe:--- Pull up the carpet and let it dry from underneath. Put some boxes under it so it is suspended and the air is circulating all around it. You may have to get rid of the pad underneath - but at least try to dry that the same way as the carpet before you pitch it. Perhaps use some fans to circualte the air around the area. This will also get the wet carpet and pad up off of the sub-floor. After a few days, you can relay the carpet, with the old or replacement pad and have a carpet guy stretch it.

I'm sure the smell can be neutralized with the products suggested - you probably want to do that while it is in the drying stage.

I have to give him credit for trying. I'm really careful not to say too much about it because he thought he was doing good. And he was but wow, I couldn't breathe when I got home.

I still smell it but he says he doesn't. I really think the carpet needs to come up. If nothing else at least like a PP mentioned, to let it dry underneath and replace the padding. I can't imagine that it didn't soak into that.

I've never heard of using vodka. I don't have any but that gives me a reason to stop into the liquor store.

We use vodka instead of fabreze to get the stink out of costumes.
