Embarrassed/nervous to rent a scooter

For all of you worried or embarrassed about needing a scooter or wheelchair, in WDW, please let me put your mind at rest. There are sooo many people using both -- there is a reason why accessibility has been made a priority there. If you have any apprehension about being able to walk all day, remember that doing the parks all day is hard on even those who have no disability and are at least relatively fit. So, my advice to you is to be overly cautious -- conserve your energy and avoid pain as much as possible, since you know that overdoing it will make the rest of the trip harder.

BTW, my father had MS so we grew up with wheelchairs, scooters, everything. When I remember my childhood, I don't think about his wheelchair -- I think about all the things that having one let him do with us. My brothers and I also believe that having had this experience made us better people because we have a greater understanding of how much harder even simple things can be for others.

Good luck to all of you!

I was a lot like you. I'm 30 years old. I've got a brain tumor and a rare disease, but from the outside you may see me as a seemingly healthy, but slightly overweight (thanks to the tumor and the rare disease) young person. I thought I'd be embarrassed and yes, there were times I was, like when I couldn't get my ECV on the bus. I'd get so flustered. It was horrible. BUT, it allowed me to enjoy the parks and have a freedom I don't normally have, especially at home where I don't have one to use. In the parks it was heaven. I could go where I wanted to go and do what I wanted to do and stay all day. If you want to PM me, go for it. I can tell you about my experiences. All I can say is that I really encourage you to go for it and get one. Enjoy your trip. :thumbsup2

You need to rent one off site to save money it's the best decision you could make. I was worried the first time I rented one I do not look like I need one and when I get off to walk short distances except for a mild limp I walk fine. The only thing that bothers me is I waited too long to rent a scooter. The buses look a little intimidating but they are not I did just fine my first time on the buses. I loved having a scooter so much I have my own now. I can do 10 times as much at Disney with a scooter and still enjoy myself

Thanks for all the support! I rented one from Walker. Now I just hope I don't run anyone over! :rotfl:
