Email account that works for a Mac?

My husband just bought me a new Mac laptop, and I'm still figuring out how to use it, so if my question is a dumb one I apologize!!!
I have yahoo email and when I clicked on the little mail icon and put in the email account info it told me I had to upgrade (to the type you pay for) for it to work.
Are there other e-mail accounts that are free and work on the Mac? I can obviously still access my e-mail now, but it would be convenient to have one that works with the little mail section.

Oh yes! I have it on my top sites and it's easy enough, but it would be even easier if I could use the mail section of the laptop. You can print address labels and other stuff and it just sort of stinks not being able to use that whole feature.

It's not a mac thing. It's a yahoo thing. Yahoo requires you to pay if you use any email client. If you use gmail you will be able to do it for free.

My old laptop was so old it didn't have the e-mail client thing, so this is all new to me!
