Elf on the Shelf?

I read about the Elf on the Shelf on this board last year and this year I'm thinking I'd like to do it for my kids.

Does anyone know where the cheapest place to buy the set might be? Or are they just $29.99 everywhere?

Also, when does the elf show up? Thanksgiving, or before then? What cute things has your elf done to keep the kids interested?
