I work on the 4th floor of a 4 story building. I was waiting for the elevator to go up to the 4th floor when the door opens and this man was standing there. I get onboard, and we begin to go UP to the 4th floor. As we are ascending, the guy looks at me and says, "We're going down, right?" I couldn't believe me ears, thinking certainly he couldn't be serious. So, I said, "Well, we were on the 1st floor and now we are on the 4th." He said, "Ok." and got off the elevator. He didn't look disabled or mentally handicapped, but he was dead serious. My question is, I know that I can feel the difference in the sensation between going UP and going DOWN, is this a feeling that not everyone can distinguish? It was very strange, almost a Twilight Zone sort of moment...

I can usually tell, but I know some people can't.

Maybe an inner ear thing?

I think that if you get on an elevator and expect it to go one way, but it goes the other, as long as you feel the movement, you may t hink it is going the way you eexpect, until some other clue tells you you're going the other way.

I forgot to add that this is an OPEN GLASS elevator, so you can actually SEE which way you are going, up or down... so that made it even more strange...

That made me laugh.

The building I work in is three floors. The main floor is the 2nd floor (go figure). There's a doctor's office on the 3rd floor and the 1st floor is vacant.

People constantly come into my office asking if the doctor's office has moved because they hit "3" on the elevator and end up going down to "1". A lot of times I think it's because you would normally hit "1" to get to the ground floor (not basement), so people hit "1", somehow stop at "2" to exit the building, and so the next person who gets on goes down before going up.

It freaks a lot of people out.

I often want to tell them it's a Wonka-vator...doesn't go up and down, it goes side to side.

A lot of the people that frequent our building are going to see their probation officer, and (not to stereotype but) he looked like he may be headed that way... so maybe he wasn't feeling "quite like himself" or something...
