Elephants at AKL?

"Are the animals and birds on the Savannahs 24 hours a day? Where do they sleep?

The Savannahs are the actual home for the animals and birds. All animals inhabiting the Savannah return periodically to an on-site animal care facility for feeding and routine care. Many of the species browse, as well, on Savannah plantings that are part of their everyday diet and are continually replenished by horticulturists.

The animals sleep on the Savannahs, although they are generally much further back and therefore you can't see them sleep.

A number of the animals are nocturnal and so you may spot them in the middle of the night. (Deb awoke one morning at 2:00am and found 2 Zebra grazing right outside her balcony.) "

I recall reading somewhere that there are always animals on at least 2 of the savannahs.

Cheers

I was at the very end of the Zebra trail(5th floor) and the view from my room was on the border of two savanahs which kinda took away from the illusion but i'm not complaining as i booked a standard and was upgraded. I've had a savanah view on three different trips and this one rated best for most animals viewed but my first was the best in terms of total view. I didn't hear the elephants all the time but mostly in the morning. I did have what seemed like a family(2 adult-1 kid)anktole cattle that liked to sleep at night below my window sounded just like my DH snoring(kinda made me homesick for him). He called one night and i told him that and he was not amused mainly because he had to admit it was true after he heard them on the cell phone. Great writing this has made me want to plan another trip now....i think i need go to a DA meeting.

We stayed at AKL savanna view for a week in september 2004. I asked for a room with a great view and that's what we've got :) Our room was near the outlookpost, they call it "kopje" I think, at the fourth floor.
There were animals outside everytime we looked. I found it very special to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night and look out of the window after that. Every night there were 3 zebras under our balcony, it was really amazing.
And about the elephants, elephants are wonderfull creatures, but I don't think it will be very save to let them stroll on AKLgrounds.....

mhelsley: Thanks for the info! I agree with you that seeing the border of two savannahs can take away from the illusion, but does seem to provide more animal viewing. They seem to like to congregate at the back of the savannah on hot days or while waiting to go back to the barns. On one of our visits we met a woman who specifically requested a room in that part of the hotel because she had noticed on a previous trip how many animals you get to see from there.

Very funny story about the "snoring" ankole cattle!
