My 9 year old son is running for Student Council at his Elementary School. He is in 4th grade, and this is the first year that he is eligible to run. He had to gather 30 signatures of other student and 3 teachers to be put on the "ballot".

Anyway, each candidate has to make a speech. He asked me to help him with his speech. I was wondering how long the speech should be? Should it be a quick "Hi my name is.....please vote for me." kind of speech? Or should he get into hobbies and/or interests? Or something of that nature?

I do know that in order to make a "name" for himself....or to otherwise differentiate himself from the others, he should say something in his speech to make the kids laugh or something like that so they would "remember him" when they cast their ballot. Right??

Any suggestions? Is there anyone here whose child has run for Student Council in Elementary School??

Thanks bunches...

Last year my DD ran for class rep. in 3rd grade. They had to give a one minute speech (I think) to get on the nomination and then those people had to give a longer speech ( I think 2 or 3 minutes) before the voting. It was really hard to give that long of a speech. She introduced herself in the speech and then also talked about what she loved about the school and how she would listen to what her classmates wanted and do her best to relay that to the student council.

I thought I had a copy of it saved on the computer, but I can't seem to find it.

Thanks Cristi.

I was just trying to decide whether he should say anything "personal". Like that he is in Cub Scouts, or that he is on the Swim Team, or he LOVES Disney. :cool1:

He is an awesome artist and he made a couple of great looking posters to hang up in school.

I'm just thinking he is going to have to say something witty to grab everyone's attention. The only ones who can vote are 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders.

I think he probably should include something personal in there. It seems like DD did include something about being in Girl Scouts. I sure wish I could find the copy and I could post it for you.

My stepson did little index cards that said Don't be a dum dum vote for Ryan and attached a little dum dum sucker, it was his calling card. His speech was about what he wanted to do at the elementary, like projects for the students etc.

My 9 yo DD was VP last year and her speech was about a page and she had to write a little about who she was and about how she could help better the school spirit.

My 4th grader came up with his speech a few weeks ago. He was elected! Good luck to your son. :thumbsup2
