Electrical Hiccups

No, not real hiccups but those times when the power goes out for a nano second. Does it happen in your area?

We just had another one. Knocked me offline but it wasn't even long enough to cause the clocks to flash. This seems to be something I've had happen no matter where I've been living. I suspect a transformer may have blown a few minutes ago because I did hear a bang way off in the distance.

At any rate, these are annoying events. I'm always concerned they'll cause damage to one of my electrical intensive machines like the TV.

That's the main reason why I have battery back systems on my PCs and internet hardware (cable modem). And since my phone is also over the internet (Vonage), it keeps that running too.

I'm going to buy them for my Dishnetwork DVRs.

You should really invest in a decent surge suppressor. The key element for one is the "JOULES" rating. The higher, the better. Also generally more expensive but most of them come with an equipment insurance policy if something is damaged because their device failed to protect it.

We get them all the time at work; especially since we're in an area with new subdivisions, homes, streets etc. being connected to the grid. Even though I'm in a newer school with huge servers etc. the power will go off briefly and back-up lights on; fire doors slam shut and the computers power down!!!!! It's a royal nuisance to anyone teaching in a computer lab. I learned many years ago to SAVE, SAVE, SAVE frequently when working on documents.

When I was instructing adults in using programs like MS Word I always told them to save whenever they paused to think; it works well for me around here.

We have surge protectors at home for the same reason even for our heat pump to save on wear and possible damage. It is definitely worth the extra $90 or so!
