Are they expensive to replace? Tonight dh was out side and saw a trail of water coming out of the garage. The only thing in the garage is the water heater. Unfortunely I have be decluttering the garage moving stuff from one side of the garage to the other. Well guess what side the remaining stuff in on? Yup in front of the water heater.

Dh climbed up and took a look and said he saw some water dripping from the bottom of the heater. He turned off the cold water valve just in case. This water heater is only 6 yrs old. I can't believe we are going to have to replace it already.

look at lowes.com or homedepot.com. DH bought one larger than we really needed a couple of years ago, but I don't recall the price off the top of my head.

I think we paid $750 to have ours replaced the summer of 09. Hope nothing got ruined!

A.O. Smith is a good brand, recommended by our HVAC guy, and is a brand Lowes carries. However, unless you're experienced with soldering, you might want to call a professional. And if you're going to do that, you should today if you haven't already because post Thanksgiving is the busiest time for plumbers ;)

We've had a few water heater leaks before the "big one" that made us replace it. Find where the leak is coming from, and check the owners manual. We only replaced once our bottom rusted through (which sounds like it might be the case for you). From now on we'll be performing regular maintenance, including draining the sediment once a year and checking our anode rods (we have soft water, which apparently accelerates water heater corrosion). Also, we bought an aluminum pan for the water heater to sit in. It drains directly into our floor drain so the next time a leak happens, nothing is destroyed.

FWIW, our water heater was only 5 years old when we had to replace it.

Ugh it's bad! The water heater is an A.O Smith. The heater split down the side of the water heater at the seam. What I thought was the shut off valve to the cold water was a shut off valve to the hot water. So today we are sitting here with no water in the house at all, at least until my dh gets home and starts working on it. Our neighbor is going to help him change out the old one and put in the new one. He knows how to solder the pipes.

I just am thankful that we decided to do a low key Thanksgiving this year and I don't have anything to cook today!
