We need a new sofa and it's been years since I've looked at any. Visited a large furniture store today and sat in a power electric reclining sofa. I loved it. I didn't even know that these existed- we have the kind with the lever that you pull to make the legs go up. Any one have a power one and have any problems with them? It comes with a 1 year warranty on the motor if I buy it.

We have sectional with 2 power recliners, have had it for over 3 years with no problems! We did buy the extended warranty, so of course nothing will break. We also have 3 kids who use them. We bought ours from havertys.

We have had two power recliners (same brand/model) since summer 2011. I'm not sure I'd buy another.

They're fine for the most part, but it's a bit irritating to have to climb out of them when the power goes out and your feet were up. One of the two also has random fuse issues. Once every couple of weeks, for some unknown reason, just as I've started to lower the footrest, it will it trip the circuit and kill the power. To fix it, you have to unplug it, leave it unplugged for about a minute, and then plug it back in.

In retrospect, the hand-lever is so much simpler.

I got a power recliner/power lift chair for my late mother for health reasons. I use it now. It strained my back to operate the lever in other recliners the family had. I remember my dad having the same problem. Lost, you're lucky you have no health problems to contend with at this time. Someday you might appreciate having this feature or being able to provide it for an ailing parent who needs to put their feet up but cannot operate a lever. The remote control and electrical operation may be a necessity, not a convenience.

If any electrical appliance regularly tripped a breaker in my home, I would make sure that appliance was on a dedicated circuit and upgrade the electrical service if necessary. 3CW, if something is tripping a breaker, that is a fail safe in operation and it means you need to take action to fix the problem.

We have two love seats and a chair with power recliners - love them. We went to these when my husband needed to have both knees replaced as he didn't have the strength in his legs to get the foot rest "kicked into" the chair anymore. Never had a problem with them.

We have 2 couches, so 4 electric recliners, and I hate them. One, the couch is so uncomfortable to lay down on. And, miraculously, my family gets off the recliner without putting them back down.

I know people with them, I am too impatient, I hate waiting for them to sllllloooooooowwwwwly close!

Especially when the telephone is ringing

Omg, I was just going to post this. It's a running family joke to say in slo-mo: I'mmmm commmming. Be riiiiight thereeee.

I quit even trying to answer the phone unless it's on the couch with me.

Ha ha Disboards need a like button :woohoo:

We have them on our new sofa and still can't decide if we like them. I love that you can adjust them the amount of incline to exactly where you want vs. the old style where the only choices are up or down, but like others have mentioned it is slow to go down when you are in a hurry.

Yeah, this.

Also, the hydraulic arm on one of ours broke within 4 months. It just sheared right off... luckily still under warranty so it is fixed now.

As someone else, mentioned it is another mechanism to break.

My mother's power/lift recliner has battery backup for when the power goes out. Of course I forgot that the other week when I was staying w/ her and the power went out and was struggling to get her out of it (she is ill and frail). :rotfl2:

we have one that we bought from Costco a few years ago. luckily, we bought from Costco. We have had a repair guy out here a couple times. You have to be really careful with the cords. Our is not up against a wall or anywhere too close to a wall and we have tile floor. And we have 3 dogs. With dog hair. I have to be very careful vacuuming the dog hair from underneath. And then there's hiding the cords. And the fact it has stopped working at least 2-3 times. We love it but probably won't buy another power one again.

I've had mine for four years or so. I love them. We have a sofa and loveseat, and my favorite thing is that you can stop the incline anywhere you want, so it's very comfortable. We haven't had any trouble whatsoever with the mechanisms (which I am now sure I will since I said that) and we have very reliable electrical service so losing power has not been an issue either. As others have said, it seeeems like it takes a loooong time to go up and down but really is just a few seconds. Would definitely buy again just for the "custom" recline position.

OP here, thanks for all the input. We just ordered 2 love seats and a recliner- all powered from the furniture store. Got a 2 year warranty on the motor and parts. The salesman said that there is new motors out now that are faster- used in BMW cars. He had me try a seat with an older motor recline and then the newer one and I know what people are talking about now. It was much slower in the older seat to recline and sit up than the newer one we got. I'm also facing knee replacement over the next year and can no longer kick in a regular reclining sofa. Thanks everyone.
