Does anyone have an electric fireplace? I love to hear opinions on them!! Thanks so much!!:)

Yes, I have one. I would have loved to have a natural gas one but it would have been a ridiculous price to have one installed so I bought a small electric fireplace. It is in our family room which is located on the lower level of our raised ranch house. I live in SW Ontario (Canada) and the winters can be quite cold so I wanted to cozy up the room. It is a small fireplace with a heater built in so it does warm up the room. We really like it and the "flame" is fairly realistic looking. A lot of people I know have them here and they are a great alternative to the real thing.

We have an electric insert to our regular fireplace. It is very pretty but it doesn't make enough heat to justify the cost of the electricity!!! In 9 years we have turned it on maybe 10 times!

I just got one as my Christmas gift from DH. I have always wanted a fireplace, but it would have been crazy to install a gas FP, so we went with electric and I LOVE it! Ours is a pretty big one - I can get details on size for you if you want - and it throws a good amount of heat. The last couple of weeks have been so cold here and turning the fireplace on has really taken the dampness out of the living room. DH said he was really surprised by the heat that it gives off. And it really only costs us cents per hour to have it on. It has been great!

It also has an air purifier which is nice. We also got a flat screen TV for on the wall above the fireplace and I just love it all.

I have one in my living room and it is used mostly for looks but I do turn it on sometimes in the morning to take the chill off. It's also great for hanging the stocking at christmas.

we have one from lowes and we love it, it is in the northwest corner of our living room and it helps a lot in this old farm house.

It gives some good heat...

We have a ginormous wood burning/gas starter one in the great room and it doesn't compare but it's cute and warm and fun in the kitchen.

I paid $198...just saw one at Walmart for $150.

We have an electric fireplace in our 400 sq ft cabin. It warms the cabin when we need it. It too has the fan you can turn on for heat or you can just have on the fake "flame" for ambiance. Serves us well at the getaway. Ours is a Dimplex.

We have one in our living room. It is so pretty to look at, and also gives off quite a bit of heat. It will get our living room pretty hot, and it is a huge room. We love ours, even though we would have preferred gas, that is until a friend of mine had a big mess. Hers went out and it turned eveything in her house black. She scrubbed for 2 days straight. I am so glad I have electric.

I would like to know the dimensions of your fireplace, and where you bought it (or at least the brand name). I've been looking at electric fireplaces for a couple of years now. Nothing seems just right. Either it's just too small for our large living room, or if it's large enough, the logs & flame are just too ridiculous looking to even consider.

thanks! :)

Hi Mary,

We had a difficult time finding just the right one for our living room too. I wanted something fairly large and I kept looking at Home Depot and Lowes and they were all too small there. I wanted to replace our entertainment center, so I needed something big enough to be the focal point of the room.

Everyone has commented about how real the flames and logs look in ours. It has a remote with multiple settings - you can make the flames more or less "active" and you can set how bright you want it to be. You can also run just the fan without the flames or just the air purifier.

Our fireplace is the Dimplex Sussex model. It is 55" long x 48" high x 18" deep. It's about the same size as what my entertainment center was which was important to me so I had enough space on the mantel for my Christmas village and other decorations I have up there throughout the year.

I bought it from a local dealer - you can get a list of them here -- http://www1.dimplex.com/wheretobuy.aspx?productCode=DIM

I was going to order it online through www.electricfireplacesource.com. I read good things about them and it was actually cheaper through them, but it would have taken longer to get, so I just got it locally. Here is the one that I got -- http://www.electricfireplacesource.com/products.cfm?action=view&key=DX013

Good luck finding what you want! If you have any other questions about ours, feel free to ask.
