We have an electric blanket, but it's a new, low voltage one. My old one scared me since it sometimes worked, sometimes didn't. As far as any health risks, I usually preheat the bed and then leave it on until I get warmed up and then turn it off to actually sleep. It is covered up by other blankets--there are no warnings on my blanket about that.
