What does everyone know about El Paso? I will be stopping there on my road trip across America and sleeping there for a night. Is it a safe town? Does anyone recommend a hotel or a restaurant. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi!

I lived in El Paso for a year.
There is an awesome restaurant called Cattleman's, it is outside of El Paso in a town named Fabens. It will be about a 20 minute drive but it is well worth it!
I can recommend the Hilton at the Airport because I have stayed there. It is nice, clean and in a safe area.
El Paso is like any large city, it does have alot of crime. It is also on the border of Juarez, Mexico...... If you decide to go into Mexico, I would recommend going in the daytime and going with a group.

Hope this helps!:thumbsup2

Well, I live less than 100 north of there and we go frequently to shop. Personally, I cannot stand EP! We've stayed at the Hilton Airport or Radisson Airport when we have an early morning flight. We prefer mexican food. I'd ask the front desk at whatever hotel you stay at to recommend a good place that the locals eat at (since I don't know where you are staying, can't recommend a place). You certainly don't want to stay on one side of the city and drive to the other just to eat. After living here for 25 years, I still find it easy to get lost in El Paso. (We never get lost in Albuquerque!). You need to be very, very careful about crossing the border (I would highly discourage it). The police ARE the criminals there and its just nasty filthy. Good luck.

im kind of nervous going here. maybe the hilton is the best bet then. Im only stopping here on my way to San Diego. Ill be coming from Austin, would you reccomend stopping some place else between austin and arizona.

Its about 600 miles from Austin to El Paso - thats a long trip! I assume you are driving on I-10 - I can't think of much to see between Austin & El Paso on I-10.
The Hilton is nice, clean, and in a decent area of town. There is a nice restaurant in the hilton if you want to eat there instead of going out. Or if you want to go out and stick close by there is a steak and seafood restaurant named Cattle Baron. Its maybe 1/2 mile from the hilton. I think right next to that there is an Applebees.

Can't help you with El Paso, but I can recommend http://www.tripadvisor.com/. This is a great site for travelers. I used it when I chose my honeymoon in Cancun, Mexico. The reviews are written by those people who stay at the hotels so you know you are getting a true review. Also, they have a great forum section for just about any place you'd like to go, so I'm sure you can find a forum for El Paso, if not, at least the Texas forum. Hope that helps.

Bumping this to remind myself to check with DS-he works for the city of Laredo, and is more familiar with El Paso than I am. However, both DSs know Austin fairly well. Anyplace that markets T-shirts saying "Keep Austin Wierd" has me wondering!

You will be FINE! You are only spending the night, not moving here! The Hilton is a good choice because it is right off the interstate. I am also assuming you will be on I-10. The exit you want is called Airway Blvd. There will be lots of signs telling you this is the way to the airport. And that's where you want to go! Easy off and easy back on to the freeway! El Paso is a good halfway point. And trust me....in this part of the country towns can be few and far between!

Thanks everyone but I have bad news about the Hilton. ITS ALL BOOKED!!! ahhhhhh, Anything as good?

I think the Radisson is right around the corner. I have been there for work a few times but stayed at the Hilton. There are a few hotels around the airport. Look at a trip site (ex. Orbitz) to look for hotels close t the airport. Also, I do not recommend going across the border at EP.

There are quite a few hotels right there together (Hawthorn Suites, Marriott, Radisson.......really you can "see" what's there on Tripadvisor). I have stayed at the Hilton, Radisson and Hawthorn. There are lots of chain motels, hotels, inns and will cover every need and price range!
