We are just back from an eight-day trip to WDW and it literally seems like all we did was eat, which is not necessarily a bad thing. Our trip was a mix of new and familiar restaurants, with several new favorites. Such as, I am REALLY craving a nutella and fruit waffle from Sleepy Hollow right now. Those were crazy good! And don't even get me started about the onion rolls at Yachtsman. Yeah, I am all about the carbs, obviously.

The 'we' consists of me; DH, DS21 and his girlfriend, DGF20--both on their college spring breaks. DS17 is traveling to Florida with a friend and his family in early April on his spring break, so he did not join us on this trip.

This was our first trip back to WDW since 2011, when we took two trips--in April and July. Seemed crazy to be traveling with an 'adult' child--especially since our first trip to WDW was when both boys were 2 and 5. Enough of the back story--on to the reviews. First, a list of the places we ate on this trip:

Everything POP
Yachtsman Steakhouse
EPCOT Flower and Garden Festival booths
EPCOT snacks and drinks--Germany, Morocco, France
Beaches and Cream
SciFi Theatre
Starring Rolls
BlueZoo
Rose and Crown
La Hacienda San Angel
Sleepy Hollow
MK Egg Rolls, Dole Whips,
Casey's
Tony's Town Square
Raglan Road
House of Blues
50s Prime Time Cafe
Mama Melrose
Kona Cafe
Sanaa

Thanks for joining in! We are on the last leg of our journey home--I am writing this from a Courtyard Mariott while waiting for everyone to wake up! It always seems like a good idea to drive to Orlando until the reality of a
19-hour trip sets in!

We also have two other places worth mentioning where we ate on this trip: BBQ King in Charlotte, NC and Dukes BBQ in Orangeburg, SC. Because I watch a lot of Food Network, we always try to hit places from the Best Thing I Ever Ate while on trips. BBQ King was our stop on the way to FL, and the fried chicken, accoring to DH and DS21 was 'pretty good' but not the best fried chicken ever, as touted by Guy Fieri. It is fried and then dipped in bbq sauce, so kind of a different take on fried chicken. The place is a drive-in, so you can probably guess it has fries, onion rings, coleslaw, etc. DGF20 had a fried fish plate and hushpuppies, which she said were good. I had a grilled cheese and coleslaw. (I should add here that I don't eat meat or fish--I'm a vegetarian, or a carb-atarian, as DH calls me).

BBQ King was close to the exit on I-77S and was more fun than stopping at a traditional 'fast food' place. Might not be a place we would stop again, kind of a 'been there, done that' restaurant, but st

Looking forward to your reviews. It's nice to have a little review of what you saw touted on the Food Network. I've always wondered if those places are as good as they say they are. Safe travels home!

Hi
I'm in. I don't eat any meat either, so eager to read your veggie reviews!
Thanks.

Everything Pop and Yachtsman Steakhouse

First up in our Disney dining experience was at Everything Pop. Arriving in Orlando around noon, we checked in at Pop Century (our room was ready) and then had lunch at the food court. The make-your-own salads were good and fresh, with lots of choices. We got two salads and split them between the four of us. I ordered chicken on the side for the salad that DH and I shared, and it worked well. They gave us the chicken--which was hot and fresh--in a small container. They are also happy to give you a second bowl, which makes it easy to split the salad. We had an early dinner ADR at Yachtsman Steakhouse and wanted to save room, so we ate a light lunch. However, I did have to try an Elvis cupcake--the signature Pop cupcake--chocolate cake with banana cream filling, peanut butter frosting and candied bacon.

Meh. Dry cake, very little filling and the frosting was not peanut-buttery enough. I scaped the bacon off my part of the cupcake and DS ate it. I am a big cupcake fan, and while there was nothing wrong with this cupcake, IMHO, it did not live up to my anticipation of eating said cupcake.

So after enjoying a beautiful afternoon, we got cleaned up and headed out to Yachtsman Steakhouse, a new restaurant for us. Wow. We set the bar high for the rest of the week. Suffice it to say we all LOVED Yachtsman--even me, the vegetarian. First of all, how can you go wrong with the onion rolls? Truth be told, they are the reason I even made the reservation in the first place. Soooooo good! The other rolls (maybe sourdough?) were not bad, either. So after scarfing down two baskets of rolls and fighting over the butter, our entrees arrived. Our server, who said he is at Yachtsman while the renovations are being made at California Grill, was great--attentive, but not overly so, and he was willing to bring us multiple onion rolls.

DH and DS both got Sam Adams beer and the New York strip and prounced it the best steak ever. I think they ordered them (and received them) medium rare. We also got carmelized onions and the truffle macaroni and cheese for the table. Everything was great. DH and DS barely talked while they literally devoured their steaks.

DGF had the lobster bisque, which she enjoyed (but not as much at the lobster bisque at Le Chefs de France) and I had the heirloom tomato appetizer with tempura fried fresh mozzarella. Quite literally, it was the best thing I ate all week. So flavorful, with balsamic vinegar and fresh basil, and the tempura fried mozzarella was perfect with the ripe tomatoes.

Not sure why, with 15-plus trips to WDW, it has taken us so long to get to Yachtsman Steakhouse. It definitely won't be that long before we go back. It was the perfect start to the trip and left us all raving about all aspects of the meal, from the onion rolls--perfection, I tell you--the steak, and the heirloom tomatoes.

Stuffed, we declined dessert and strolled to Epcot. DS21 had his first legal drink in a Disney park, and not a bad one at that--a Grey Goose slush from France. All in all, a perfect dining day in Disney.

I should note that we were not on a dining plan, so all meals were OOP. In addition, I forgot to add Be Our Guest to the list of places we dined on this trip.

Next up: Sci Fi Theatre and BlueZoo. Plus dessert at Beaches and Cream!

Sounds like a success so far! Love the Yachtsmen! Look foreward to the rest of your reviews!

Sci-Fi Theatre/BlueZoo/Starring Rolls/Beaches and Cream

Our second day of Disney dining had slightly mixed results. We started with lunch at Sci-Fi Theatre. It was just not that great. Fine, passable, but not really that good. Maybe because there was no humidity and it was not all that warm outside (low 70s) we didn't need that welcome respite inside the dark and cool restaurant. We have been many times before over the years, and IMHO, the food has declined to the point the atmosphere just isn't worth it for us. Our server was fine and relatively quick, so that was not an issue. Based on this meal and the past several meals we have had here, I think this just might be a Disney restaurant that I am 'over.'

The food is just not that exciting to us anymore--not that we chose anything exciting to order--have to acknowledge that up front. I had a caesar salad; DH had chicken wings with honey-chipotle barbeque sauce; DS had buffalo popcorn chicken; and DGF had a caesar salad. Everyone liked the wings the best out of the bunch--they came with blue cheese dressing. They also thought the popcorn chicken, which came with blue cheese dressing and celery, was good. I have had better caesar salads, and I have had worse caesar salads. This one was solidly in the middle of the road--a little bit wilted and over-dressed.

We did not have dessert, because we wanted to get a cupcake at Starring Rolls. We had a chocolate peanut butter cupcake and it was AWESOME. Sweet, lots of peanut butter filling and creamy frosting. We all shared it and DH had a cup of coffee. DS wanted milk to go with the cupcake but he was too lazy to get up and buy one. Yum. This was the second best cupcake of the week--the first was the strawberry cream cheese cupcake at Be Our Guest.

After another afternoon at the pool, we headed to BlueZoo for dinner. After cancelling a reservation in 2011, we wanted to make sure we tried it this year--it was our first visit and we loved it. Not as much as Yachtsman Steakhouse, but close. We valet parked at the Dolphin and our server validated the parking pass, so we did not have to pay for parking, which was nice. I didn't realize they do that.

We started with an appetizer, the Teppan Seared Sea Scallops with braised beef shortribs. It was a great appetizer and they all loved it. DH said the scallops were perfect and the short ribs were so tender they melted in his mouth.

DH had the smoking sangria, which he liked, and chose the day's fish with the crabmeat sauce and said it was delicious. He considered eating the sauce with the spoon. He is a big fan of seafood, so he was pleased with his fish. DS had a beer (forget the brand) and black truffle chicken with gnocchi and spinach and just about licked his plate. It was his second favorite meal of the week (behind his New York Strip at Yachtsman) until we ate at Sanaa and then he was all about the butter chicken. But I am getting ahead of myself. I had the classic flatbread, which was great, and DGF had the clam chowder with homemade crackers. She loved her soup and ate some of my flatbread. I have to also give a shout out on the bread basket here. What is it with signature restaurants and the bread? You could (or at least I could) make a meal out of the bread.

I had been dreaming about the No Way Jose sundae at Beaches and Cream, so we declined dessert to go back into Hollywood Studios and then get a later dessert.

When we arrived back at Beaches and Cream (around 9:45 p.m.) it was PACKED with people. We put in our name with the hostess and waited in the long line for take-out ice cream. Of course, we got to the front of the line before our buzzer went off to be seated. Here is where we had our first Disney magic moment--a cast member heard me say I wanted a No Way Jose, which in the past has not been available in the take-out line. I must have looked pretty disappointed, so after we ordered hot fudge sundaes and sat at an outside table, she appeared with the peanut butter sauce (LOVED it) and the chocolate and peanut butter chips that garnish the sundae. Made my night. Literally. So I had a do-it-yourself No Way Jose and it was perfect! Nice way to to end the night!

Next up: Rose and Crown/La Hacienda de San Angel

I'm so happy you enjoyed bluezoo! I'm hitting it for the first time in May. I've been looking at the scallop & short rib appetizer so I was glad to see it on your review! Now I can't wait to try it for myself!

Your YSH review is making me hungry (even without photos LOL!)...been reading lots of great reviews of YSH lately. Was our fav many years ago and then it kinda went downhill a few years back so we stopped going but after hearing lots of great things lately, well, I'm ready to head on back.:goodvibes

Great reviews so far! Looking forward to reading more. The no way jose pixie dust is awesome!

Love hearing about Yachtsman. A new restaurant for us this trip.

I spent a lot of time reading reviews on Yachtsman, too! And in all seriousness, the onion rolls were what enticed me. Well, that and the fact that DS21 loves steak. Hope you love it as much as we did!

Sounds like a success so far! Love the Yachtsmen! Look foreward to the rest of your reviews!

Most of our choices were a success this time--we branched out a little and ate at some new places, and that was fun!

I'm in too! Great start, excited to read more!

Thanks for reading along!

We ordered the scallop and short rib appetizer based on the recommendation of our server. He said it was his absolute favorite. DH went to BlueZoo intending to order the shrimp and grits appetizer, but our server changed his mind. It is not a huge portion--two scallops--but it worked because DH and DGF ate the scallops and DS and DH ate the short ribs.

I took a few photos, but not that many. In addition, I have always been too lazy to figure out how to post them here and DS17 just rolls his eyes at me when I ask for technical assistance. LOL. That being said, I always like the reviews with pictures the best,so I have to try to at least be descriptive! Thanks for reading! Since it was our first visit, I don't have any historical perspective. But like you, I had been reading great reviews and decided to give it a shot. We were so glad we did!

I am planning to email Disney because the cast member was so sweet to bring me the peanut butter sauce, which I could drink, by the way. It is that good--at least in my opinion!

LOL I agree about learning how to post pics. I take lots of pictures and post them on facebook but I can not get into figuring out how to do it here! Sorry everyone. And like you said when I ask DS for help he even told me it was too much for me! :rotfl:

Rose and Crown/La Hacienda De San Angel

The next day found us at Epcot. I should note that we did not have park hoppers for this trip, so that confined us to one park per day. I like to save the money, and we have found that there is less stress for us in choosing just one park per day. I do miss playing what we used to call 'bus roulette' which was to board whichever park bus happened to drive up first at our resort--and we had to have hoppers to have that freedom. But that was way back in the day when you didn't necessarily have to have an ADR for every meal to eat at a table service restaurant.

Anyway, I changed my Epcot reservations around several times from Le Chefs de France and Via Napoli to Le Cellier and Coral Reef--all places we have eaten before. Then, since DS21 recently turned 21, I figured he would like the beer at Rose and Crown (he loves Guiness). In addition, we had not been at Rose and Crown for several years. So that's where we went--but it was not the best decision. We had a nice table outside, but our server was terrible. He literally disappeared forever. No water refills, no 'how is your meal,' no offers for an additional beer, etc. And he committed the greatest sin of all for a server in my eyes: he took forever to bring the check and then didn't return after he brought it. That drives me crazy--it is my biggest restaurant pet peeve. Especially when you have fast passes for Soarin that are going to expire.

DH had beer and fish and chips; DGF also had fish and chips. They said they were fine but did not rave about them. DH does love malt vinegar on both the fish and chips, so he was happy to add that. The pieces of fish were quite large.

DS had the breakfast burger with a fried egg and bacon. He liked it--he generally likes any burger. Add bacon and he is in heaven. He said it was good, but he did not rave about it. However, he was thrilled with the fried pickle that comes on the plate with the burger. That, he LOVED. He also had a Guiness and was a happy camper. Interesting side note--he was asked for ID at most restaurants--and as many newly-minted legal drinkers, he was always happy and quick to produce his driver's license. However, at Rose and Crown, he was not carded. The only other place he was not carded was BlueZoo.

After an afternoon in the sun at the pool, we went back to Epcot. We have never been for the Food and Wine Festival, so it was fun to be there with the food booths for the Flower and Garden Festival. I started with an iced mint tea at Epcot, which DS said tasted like 'backwash from chewed gum.' LOL. I have always liked it, but I had to sort of agree with his description.

DS and DH had beer from Germany and a couple other places. They also fought over the iced coffee drink with bourbon from the Joy of Tea in China. I had read about it, but it was not on the menu, so I asked and they called it their 'seasonal selection. Anyway, it is an iced coffee/tea concoction that is HEAVY on the bourbon. Topped with whipped cream. So good we had to get another one. Also, while in China, I got a steamed vegetable bun which was dry and then sugar-glazed strawberries. Fresh strawberries with a sweet sugar crunch. Those were awesome. I have to figure out how to make them. So good we got another skewer of them.

Next up was dinner at La Hacienda de San Angel. We had an ok meal there in 2011, but I was hoping we could snag a table for Illuminations, so we gave it a shot. I am so glad we did. We had an awesome table (one row back from the windows near the middle of the restaurant with an 8 p.m. ADR. Our server was one of the best we had in Disney this trip.

We started with the queso fundido (cheese with chorizo sausage) and flour tortillas. We all LOVED it. The sausage comes in the middle, so I ate the cheese around the edges. Our server brought us multiple warm flour tortillas. We also got the complimentary chips and salsa. DH, DS and DGF shared the La Hacienda platter with chicken, chorizo and and New York strip. They LOVED it. It was plenty for them after the appetizer, and luckily, they all had different favorites on the platter. It also came with grilled vegetables and rice and bean. I had the vegetarian tacos, which were also really good--grilled zucchini, peppers and onions, along with esquites (roasted corn) which was awesome. We all kind of shared everything. DH had a classic margarita and DS had an orange fire margarita. Both loved their drinks.

It was just a really nice dinner, capped off by dulche de leche ice cream and an empanada with apples and caramel. We had a good view of illuminations. They dimmed the lights and piped in the music. I am so glad we gave this place another chance. The atmosphere, the food and the service--along with capping it off with Illuminations made for a truly great dinner!

Next up: Be our Guest, many MK snacks, and Tony's Town Square

I totally forgot to add what I ate for lunch at Rose and Crown--the vegetable stone pie with a side salad. I really didn't like it. It was very 'eggy' and a sort of weirdly sweet. So much so, in fact, that I was craving a pretzel after lunch to counterbalance the eggy sweet flavor. I am a vegetarian, but I eat eggs, so that was not the problem. It was much 'taller' than a regular quiche with very few vegetables and a huge tower of eggy custard stuff. In fact, I counted one mushroom total. It was more like a breakfast dish. The side salad had greens I could not identify--and I have eaten my fair share of salads. Slightly bitter in taste, but not a good bitter. All in all, not one of my better meals.

I had intended to order the sticky toffee pudding for dessert, but by the end of the meal I was so annoyed with our server that I just wanted to get out of there. Plus, after all that egg custard, I did not want anything sweet.

I laughed when you said your DS didn't get carded. My DS27 is 6'2 weighs close to 250 and gets carded almost everyplace. He doesn't care but I always joke that they card him because I don't look old enough to have a son old enough to drink!! :rotfl:

Just joining in. I have enjoyed your reviews so far. I am looking forward to hearing about BOG, as we will be going there for the first time in April.
