Eek - Exciting times but quite nervous

So... I'm 34 and have decided to make a massive change in career direction.

I used to study music at college when I was younger and for personal family reasons I never went to university. Instead I took a year out and got a job which turned into many years out and me becoming an accountant

I don't regret much in life but have always regretted not going to university and getting a career in music and so decided to do something about it.

I recently applied to a local university for a music degree and have just been offered a place starting in September

I am so excited but really very nervous as I'll obviously be a mature student, but I just keep telling myself I'll be fine and it will be worth it.

Has any-one else studied as a mature student at uni and if so how did you find it?

DH and I both have music degrees, although we both went to uni straight from school. There were several mature students on our courses and they seemed to enjoy themselves and got along well with the rest of us in our class. I think one of the good things about music is that is it a very social course with the extra curricular orchestra, choir, various band activities etc.
Enjoy your time at uni, we did!

My niece graduated from Cambridge last summer as a mature student of 32, she was 29 when she started. Due to a combination of reasons it just wasn't the right timing for her when she was younger.

I think it was always in the back of her mind though and that it was my DD applying to uni that triggered it and she finally felt that it was her time. So the two of them went off together, albeit to different universities. My niece was put in accommodation with another mature student but had no problem settling in to student life.

My DD's course only had a handful of undergraduates on and they were all ages ranging from her being the youngest at 18 to one in his mid 30s - they all got on well and are still all in touch now.

My niece's parents were totally against her going to uni as they thought she was too old (at 29!) and had missed the boat! DH and I thought totally the opposite - no good looking back later on and having regrets so we were rooting for her. I did wonder if she'd miss earning good money as she'd had a very well paid job in the city and was used to partying hard but it didn't seem to bother her and she just adapted her social life to involve beer rather than champagne!

It definitely wasn't the right thing to do when I was younger and I am very fortunate at the moment with my home life and self employed work situations that enable me to do this now.

I know I won't finish the course until I am 38, but that still means I have another 30 years ish of working so its still a good amount of time to work in an area I really love.

I will be living at home as the uni is only 20 mins away from me, so at least I won't have to deal with being home sick lol

Congrats and good luck. On my degree course many were older students, I was 22 when I started and i'm still in touch with several of them. One of my good friends was in her 40's when she finished.

My sister had a 70 yr old lady on her degree course, you can go at any age

There are a few mature students on my course (I might technically be one now too...), and I know a lot that are doing really well (academically/socially/etc)!

I did my nurse training when I was 38 so I was a mature student. I went to music school in manchester then to the academy in london. Unfortunately it was not for me but you are never too old to follow your dreams. Good luck
