We are flying from Edmonton to Orlando via Toronto next month. We've never flown into the US on a connecting flight and I am confused as far as baggage claim, customs etc.

When we check out bags in Edmonton do we have to get our bags again in Toronto and check them to go to Orlando? Or will they go straight through? Both flights are via WestJet. What about on the way home? Again through West Jet.

When do we go through customs on the way there? In Toronto or when we lad in Orlando?

We are use to driving into the US which is easy...have only flown to the US for a quick weekend trip years ago and forget

When travelling through Toronto, it really depends on the airport, terminal and airline...

Assuming that you are connecting through Pearson (YYZ), this site is the best resource I have found...https://torontopearson.com/Connecting.aspx## You just indicate where you are coming from/going and on what airlines and it maps it all out for you.

In your particular case, you will have to pick up your baggage and "re-check" them after going through customs/immigration - this is done in YYZ as "pre-clearance" - you will not have to do this once you arrive in Orlando. Similarly, when you return home, you will do all this in YYZ, not Orlando or your home airport.

We flew West Jet Edmonton / Toronto/ Orlando in December last year....we did not have to recheck out luggage. It was waiting for us in Orlando when we landed. We flew back Miami, LA then Calgary then to Grande Prairie. We did not have to recheck luggage. But Delta did loose my bag in LA...and it did not make it home...and they broke my one and only souvenir that I brought home...was a new DW mug . Going through customs was a breeze in both Toronto and Calgary.
I would ask when you are checking your luggage. That's what we did, so we knew if we needed to collect our luggage and recheck it. But I really don't think we left security in Toronto...but then again...we took the red eye ( overnight ) flight to Toronto and I wasn't really fully awake I'm sure lol But I do remember going through customs...and being asked where we were going to stay...so I pulled out my folder of our itinerary...and the customs guy was like OOOKKKKK and chuckled lol.
