Editing software

But when it opens that isn't an option--there is no view on the tool bar...

Are you using Windows Vista? For some reason, they've hidden a bunch of the standard toolbar menus, like File, Edit, View, Tools, Help, etc.

Try ALT-V to open the hidden "View" menu. From there, you can select "Large Icons" to show decent-sized thumbnails of your photos.

Hope that helps. Let us know if it works out...or not. :)

Not Vista, new Dell laptop with Windows 7. I tried the ALT-V and got the toolbar, but thumbnails is still not an option...only different sizes (Small, medium, large, etc...) How very odd! Any other suggestions? :confused3

That was the right spot. Pick Extra Large.

A-ha! That worked! Now I have another picasa question. When I install my pictures into picasa, I then run them thru noiseware and save them on picasa again under a different title. When I go to delete the first, unfiltered batch, it deletes them all! How do I go about uploading my photos from the flashcard, filtering them, and then getting them into picasa to edit and save on a disc???

Thanks for everyone's help. This new computer/photo system has me rather confused...

I just bought a new laptop with Windows 7. Love it! :thumbsup2 But now my old (but very friendly and familiar) Microsoft Picture It! won't work on it, so I'm shopping for new software. Any suggestions? I really like to have access to a lot of different functions, elements, fonts, etc.

Thanks for any info you can provide! :goodvibes

Yesterday Target had Paint Shop Pro X2 on sale for $49. I didn't look to see how long it was good for. For free, check out Irfanview and The GIMP. I have both loaded on my Win 7 computer and they are about all I need since I do most of my work in my RAW processing software.

The $49 for PSP X2 is probably the norm now that X3 just came out (I don't advise getting X3 at this point as it is currently plagued with multiple problems) However $49 for X2 is a great deal.

Roger that. Several stores in my area have it at that price. Trying to clear their stock I imagine.

I used Picture It! back before it was Digital Image Suite. I still run DIS now and I still hate that you can't get that software, it's great simple/basic editing software. Before you buy something, if you want to try something familiar for free, check out Paint.net.

It was started by a Microsoft intern as an eventual replacement for MS Paint. It evolved into much more than what Paint could do. The original guy doesn't maintain it anymore, but from what I understand, others have. I downloaded and played with it recently it does some cool stuff. Worth a try before you buy something, in my opinion.

what would the problems be.. I've been using it and have had no problems thus far..

I've checked out some of the corel forums and many are having the same problems I have. Constant crashes, EXIF data being stipped from files, program locks up and crashes when the preview in image box is checked.

You may be one of the lucky one's who don't have any issues. While I currently use X2 regularly and really like it, for me right now, barring any patches by Corel, X3 is basic useless

How about Adobe Elements 8, more than enough power.

Jack

The PSE (Photoshop Elements Users) forum at http://www.elementsvillage.com/forums/index.php reports some issues for Windows 7 users particularly with the Organizer part of Elements Version 8. You could do a search there and read extensively about any possible problems.

I'm a happy user of old version 5 (before the black backgrounds of versions 6, 7 and 8) and never use the Organizer so it doesn't matter to me!

Thanks, I checked out the Elements forum and will download the free trial and give it a shot. Thanks everyone! :)

I currently use Adobe Photoshop with Windows XP. I like it – guess I’d say it’s OK. I have a ‘new to me’ Canon 10D - still learning but love it. Know I can download the photo utility from the Canon web site – want your suggestions before doing this...would be grateful if you (the experts) could offer me your thoughts. Am planning on using a second computer for photo storage as my laptop is almost full. So...wanted some suggestion/input.

I’m looking for a way to organize my photos that is easy to locate later with the ability to edit (enhance) a shot that needs a little help. I’m hoping for something I can download as an introductory or starter version, and if satisfied purchase a full featured model - if needed.

What do you currently use and would recommend?

And put it on a DVD that will play in a DVD player? I'm not talking about for archiving purposes, I mean I want to make a slide show of photos, put it on a DVD and have it play in a standard DVD player. Is this even possible?

Quite possible, and not very difficult. Standard DVD is limited to 720 x 480, ProShow will also create HD shows up to 1920 x 1280. Another option, many HD TVs can present slide shows from files on USB flash drives.
