Edamame--can you eat it whole?

Or does it have to be "shelled"? They look like pea pods so I thought we could eat the whole thing, but the "serving suggestion" on the bag says to "open the pods and discard outer shell".

You can only eat the peas and not the outside-(pod). So just open up the middle and pop the peas in your mouth.
