We were just at WDW last week and I learned something new. I rented an ECV at HS and then we hopped to MK at about 4:00 pm. When I got there, I found that there was a waiting list of almost 50 people to get an ECV. I did eventually get one about 2 hours later but it was definitely inconvenient to not have one for that length of time. Especially since I'd already paid my $50 rental fee.

What I learned was that even though I'd already paid my $50 rental fee at HS, that didn't mean anything at MK. People initially renting ECVs were in the same waitlist as those who had already rented earlier in the day. Personally, I expected that people who had already paid their $50 would have priorty. Disney seems to be happy to collect additional $50 fees from new people while those who have already paid go without.

My park hopping will be limited in the future.

If you rent a scooter off-site, it's cheaper, and you can take the ECV to all the parks, and back to the hotel and to DTD with you.

Wheel chairs/ECV are on a first come first serve at each park. People ahead of you have been waiting longer for a chair for that particular park than you have been . For future trips you may want to rent from an outside company as the PP stated. They deliver the chair right to your resort. No waiting in line or waiting for a chair to become available. One day rentals are $40 and three day rental is $85 and that includes free delivery and pick up.

Yes, you always take a chance that there will not be one available at the second park when you park hop.
Depending on what time they ran out, some of the people on the list when you arrived may have been waiting since mid-morning.

why should you get first dibs on a SECOND ECV?! you paid your money and you got one already. at the first park you went to. nothing entitles you to priority access anywhere else just because you had one earlier in the day.

especially at the mid to late afternoon.. all the ones that were rented first thing in the morning and later returned are being recharged.

Hell I just get a regular wheelchair and have been SOL once or twice at certain times of year/day. especially if we leave to go to a meal at DTD or a resort and then wish to return to a park afterward.

so now I just rent from offsite or bring one of mine with me.

thank you! this is a cheaper alternative that I had previously found :)

Yep, that is the risk you take when trying to park hop after renting. Once we ran into a lady at the airport who swore she was bringing her own ECV on her next visit as they were park hopping and when they got to MK in the evening to view the parade/fireworks, there were over 120 people on the waiting list. So, she and her party just sat there and eventually got one after 10 pm.

This was one of the reasons I got my first wheechair (used $100 on ebay) years ago when I first joined these boards. You are not guaranteed a chair or ECV in the second park and it states that right in the rental agreement if I am not mistaken.

I suggest renting off-site if you cannot handle being without an ECV or wheelchair at any time. Definitely cheaper too!

My logic was that Disney already had my $50 for the day for a rental fee. I would think that honoring the contract they already made with the fee already paid, would outrank someone who hasn't paid their $50 yet. But this is Disney, so I guess they try to collect as many $50 fees as they can.

And they did honour your contract. They'd not be honouring if they kicked you out of the ECV you rented to give to someone else. They didn't do that. If Disney really was trying to "collect as many $50 fees as they can", they'd make you pay again at the new park, rather than letting you get one (or join the waiting list) for free.

and Disney's logic is they can get another $50 out of somebody else for the same ECV. your contacts state you get ONE rental per day. its just a courtesy that they do not make you pay a second time if you return and wish to get another one at a later time( or different place)

Contract clearly states that if you park hop another ECV may not be available. I know they do offer a manual wheelchair if they have one available if the ECV isn't available. Be happy they don't make you rent it each time you change parks or leave and return to the park. If you need an ECV at all times then rent offsite or bring your own.

Always cheaper to rent off-site. A few of people recommend Apple, I personally use Walker Mobility, lower rates and great scooters, no problems and fast service. Either way it works out cheaper and they deliver right to your hotel.

Can any of these offsite rentals be paid with Medicaid? Although those prices listed above aren't bad, if they even include pick-up and delivery! Thanks

All of the rental companies include pick up and delivery to WDW/Orlando area resorts.

I responded to your separate thread, but am repeating it here too:

Check post 2 of the disABILITIES FAQs thread, which is near the top of this board of you can follow the link in my signature.

Post 2 has links to a number of companies that DIS posters recommend for renting ECVs (the motorized devices) and wheelchairs. I would contact one or more of them to see if they would deal with Medicaid. They may not bill Medicaid, but might provide you with bills that may then submit to Medicaid.

In order to be reimbursed, she would need a doctor’s order which says she requires the ECV or wheelchair for the trip and why. There is a possibility that Medicaid would not pay for it in any case - either because they will only pay for things that a person requires in their home or because they will only pay for things in the state that the Medicaid is from.

A manual (push) wheelchair would be a lot less expensive, so that is what I would recommend if you are not sure whether it will be reimbursed.

Deciding between a wheelchair or an ECV would depend on how long your planning to be at WDW. If your going to be there more a just a few days I would recommend the added cost for the ECV. Pushing someone around the parks everyday for a week tiring FAST! Especially during the summer months in Florida, believe me I've tried it!

Im going to close this thread because it is quite old and the information in it is located in other places, including the disABILITIES FAQs thread in post 2.
