ECV questions

Thanks for the website, I'll check it out. I realized I said scooter . . . . I'm assuming (new to all this stuff for dad) that it's the same as an electric wheelchair? Whatever will get him around . . . . I know he's having a hard time getting used to using his oxygen in public, so if they're different maybe a scooter would be "better" if you know what I mean than a wheelchair, though he definately needs something! Thanks again!

I rented an ecv at Disneyland last year. We stayed off site at the Candy Cane Inn, and I was able to drive it to both parks straight from the motel (their shuttle was not equiped with a lift, but that was fine.) It was delivered to the hotel and picked up after I left.

There is a big difference between an Electric Wheelchair (often called a Power Chair) and an Electric Convenience Vehicle (usually referred to as an ECV or Scooter).

A powerchair usually uses a joystick for control and is used by a person who cannot walk or needs assistance for any walking. Generally the medical companies will only rent a powerchair to a person who already has one, and then they will have to get a lot of settings information from the person's regular supplier so the chair can be properly set up.

An ECV will normally have three or four wheels, steered with a bicycle-tpe handlebar, and have a thumb-controlled lever for controlling speed. NBormally these are used by people who have mobility and/or stamina problems, but who are able to walk on their own.

::yes::
Power wheelchairs are more difficult for most people to get the hang of driving. They also are more expensive to buy, so most companies only want to rent them to people who know what they are doing.
