Can you folks with Kindle & Nook give me an idea of what the BOOKS cost. I've tried a google search but am only getting stuff on the Kindle & Nook themselves.

I don't normally buy hardbacks, so still paying $10 for a new release as an eBook is something I'm not likely to do. So I'm looking for equivelant costs for when a book would normally be for sale in paperbook.

thanks

Honestly, I haven't found them to be much cheaper than paper books.

It may be a bit of savings, but most of the books I'm interested in are in the $10-$13 range.

At this point an e-reader is more of a convenience than it is a money saver. Some older books are cheaper and there are a lot of indie authors that sell their books for a couple dollars but if you want the newer bestselling books, $10 is the average price point.

I am thinking of going with the Nook because I can use Overdrive from my library. What is stopping me is that I already use my ipod touch to download audiobooks from the library, so I am wondering if I need a Nook too.

I have a nook and I have about 25 books on it right now. I think I only paid for 5! The rest I got on barnes and Noble's website for free.. actually even the ones that I paid for I got for free because I paid for them with a gift card I got free from Mypoints

I did have a friend tell me that you can get many of the classics for free or for very little money. So even if I didn't use it to buy/read current books, I'd at least have 'fall back' material handy! :lmao:I really HATE finishing a book and not having another one to pick up and start.

As a matter of fact I'm out of books right now so just pulled Pride & Prejudice of the shelf, as I haven't read it in a few years.

Yes you can. I don't particularly like Amazon's formatting on most of the classics so I get mine from feedbooks.com

Just go to tthe bookstores online and check out the prices. You can browse Amazon's Kindle bookstore by bestselling, publication date, average customer review, etc. or you can search by author or title. I'm sure B&N is similar. The books are all listed by category as well - fiction and non-fiction, further broken down into categories. You'll be able to search by price as well - high to low or low to high. You can see all the free books that way!!

I have the Kindle app for my iPod Touch and I have bought six books. Four of them were for 9.99 and the two books that I got for under that price were two of the Dexter series books. I have noticed some books that are apart of a popular series tend to be lower priced.

Here's the Barnes and Noble ebooks page. :)

Interesting....I just found the Baldacci novel I bought last weekend (First Family :thumbsup2) at Borders for $9.99 to cost $14.99 to download here! :scared1:

(Oh wait...I forgot... I got it at Target for 25% off the $10 price!)

I would think, because there are no printing and shipping costs, and ebook should cost LESS. :confused3

Perhaps this Kindle/Nook idea is not for me.

Ebook pricing is not really comparable to hardback/paperback pricing. There has been a big shift this spring/summer as ebooks have gotten more and more popular.

If you want an ereader to save money and you are not a regular purchaser of hardback books, you probably aren't a good candidate for a Kindle or a Nook (or any other brand.) I find I am saving over the cost of the hardback but I am spending more because books are so easy to purchase now and I see so many more that I would like to read.

This is what I fear will happen to me. Think it's time to make sure my library card is up-to-date and get myself over there!

Excellent point, Liz. I just bought a hardcover book by an author I like. This person seems to be leaning toward the Robert B. Parker school of wide margins/large spacing :teeth: so I spent a lot of money for not a lot of book. As soon as I can get past my need to actually - vs. virtually - turn the page, I'm a candidate for an ereader.

The book publishers really don't like ebooks and are doing everything in their power to make them less popular. However, just like with digital music downloads, I don't think ebooks are going to go away and after awhile the prices will go down.

ibouncetoo, what might interest you is the ability of an ereader to use the library. Go to your local library and ask them what they recommend - you might be able to get an ereader that is compatible with your library, or find other sources for library books.

There are thousands - proably millions - of free or low cost books for ereaders out there, but you might not be interested in reading them. The most popular, newest books are just going to be priced higher, even though they don't incur printing costs, etc. The publisher still has to make money form them.

On other note: be aware that while there is discounted pricing out there for popular reading, if you want to use your e-book reader for technical books or textbooks, it's going to cost you -- big time.

I buy ebooks in the life sciences for researchers at my institution; the average cost is about $280/title. The same titles in hardback usually run a little bit under $200. This is because the physical books are sold through 3rd parties who discount them, but the publishers will only sell these ebooks directly, and they charge full-price.

I don't have any eReader yet. But, I have been collecting the free Kindle books, not any Nook or Sony ePub eBooks. Eventually, I do want an eReader that will work with my Library's Overdrive system. Should I be getting the free Nook eBooks instead? :confused3

I just hate downloading all this free PC software for all the different formats. :headache: My laptop has been slowing down from so much stuff on it.

Yes, if you're going to be using the library then you don't want to be getting kindle books. The Nook, the Kobo and Sony readers all are epub compatible but at this point Kindle is not.
