does anyone ever buy anything from ebay stores? i am always hesitant and usually the buy now prices are more but sometimes the auctions aren't...if i knew of a few good listers or who to stay away from (i was looking for an extra battery and some of the camera stores i saw there mostly seem to have junk )...

extra battery: go to Sterlingtek.com (they also have an eBay store),
cable shutter release: buy the one made in China, don't buy original Canon. It's overpriced for such a simply circuitry (they use one 'usually-off' switch, cost of manufacture about 50 cents including the packaging)
Hoya Super HMC filter: I always buy on eBay because they are far cheaper than Canadian pricing by half, and cheaper in shipping cost than B+H or Adorama. Do NOT buy when the product came from China, some of them will send you fake Super HMC filter.
Memory Card: I tend to buy 512 Mb cards Sandisk Ultra II CF. I now have collected (as of today) 11 cards. It's easier to transfer to CD-R (which is less susceptible to error than DVD) and if (touch wood) the card is corrupt, you 'only' lost the images on that one card (as opposed to using 4 Gb card and the card is corrupt, then you'll lose an equivalent of 8 512 Mb cards all at once)

thanks i was glancing at the filters there...i will need a uv but am thinking i might just use the lens/circular polarizer i have ( 55mm)if i want to use the c.p. for a while till i get another polarizer. i am hoping the cable remote i have wil fit

talking about over priced...canon has a cf wallet for $15.... or i can buy 5 at walmart for the same amount at $3 each...course it wouldn't be canon :rotfl2:

The polarizer will stop some of the light causing longer shutter speeds. Not as noticeably in full sunlight as compared to indoors.

Now there's something to consider. Thanks!
How often do cards "corrupt"? And what do you do when they do?

I've bought stuff from a few eBay stores, mostly from dealers that I am familiar with. I got a great price on my Sigma 18-125 lens from Tri-State Camera's eBay store, almost $20 cheaper than they were selling it on their own web site.

Sonno, I have not yet had a CF card go corrupt on me, but over the last 20 years I have had hard disks, floppy disks, CDs, Zip disks, PC RAM, and just about any other kind of component you can think of go bad on me at one time or another.

Any electronic component will eventually fail, and when you consider that cameras and memory cards are used in pretty rough circumstances (indoors, outdoors, in all temps and humidity conditions, in places full of static, carried around in pockets and backpacks, bumped constantly), then you realize that somewhere, sometime, you are bound to have either camera or card fail on you, and take some pics with them.

I've only had one card corrupt on me, but that cost me tens of thousands of dollars.
At the time I bought the first generation of IBM Micro Drive of 2 Gb and I was covering a bridal fashion show in NYC for a designer.

Imagine the feeling that at the end of the project (8 fashion shows) that card stopped working completely and there is no way I can retrieve any of the image.

I ended up refunding all the money paid to me by the designer and not only I lose money from all the flights, hotels, meals, taxis etc, I also lost her as a customer.

microdrives are more susceptible to failure, I would not hesitate to use a 1,2 or even 4 gig cf card.

you must have really bad luck, because even when a card fails it is usually possible to recover most if not all of the images..

ugg, in that case one time would be more than enough. i wondered if micro drives were better so maybe that is the answer to that

Okay- now I'm getting concerned. :confused3

I have a 4 gig Microdrive for my camera- should I think about replacing this down the line with something a bit better? Is CF better than a microdrive and what is the actual difference?

I'm thinking it's time to start collecting some smaller CF cards.

newer microdrives are made better than the older ones, however they are still much more susceptible to damage than cf cards, microdrives are exactly what the name implies they are very tiny hard drives, thus they are more prone to damage if dropped, originally the only way to get a high gig card was with a microdrive, but now cf comes as high as 8 gig, so there is no advantage to a microdrive, the only reason I have my 4 gig is at the time I bought it, cf cards weren't available in anything beyond 512 mb,at least that was the highest I could find .... shooting at 8megapixel I wanted a larger card to avoid constant card swapping...I also didn't know about the fragile nature of microdrives until after I bought it, plus they are extremelyt slow, and generate more heat during extensive shooting, I learned this during an afternoon shoot in 90+ temperatures, was shooting away at my model and her horse, and my camera locked up, checked the microdrive and it was HOT...once I cooled it with my auto AC, I was good to go, 'till it heated up again, really killed the flow of the shoot....now the 4gig travels in my memory case, to be used only as emergency backup...

I would definitely look at getting a few 1 or 2 gig cards to replace the microdrive,

although Kelly has a good point for using smaller cards, my preference is 1 or 2 gig, to avoid constant swapping of cards which I've read increases the chance of corruption... there are valid points for both sides of the issue...

I've been hearing stories like that second-hand for years. Of course, i don't hang out with a lot of photographers, so yours is the first one I've heard first-hand, but even so, I have always avoided micro-drives like the plague.

Memory cards are solid state, while microdrives have moving parts - tiny, tiny moving parts with tolerances litteraly in the microns.

There was a time when memory cards only came in capacities up to 512mb, and the only way to get gigabyte or greater storage was to go with a microdrive.

This is not so any more. With CF cards up to 8gb, as Mickey88 said, there is little incentive to go with a microdrive any more - especially when you look at the reasonable cost per gigabyte of of the current crop of CF cards.

I think you're right, it's time to start picking up some CF cards and ditch the Microdrive.

Supposedly my microdrive platter was bent (I know, I'm confused too). It was under warranty and that was the IBM technician told me, all they did was replaced the card with a brand new one (and I sold the brand new one on Ebay right away).

I personally haven't heard anymore (newer) microdrive horror story but I stay away from it all the same. Since then I've become paranoid of losing my data, so now I have stackloads of 512 Mb CF cards :)

Ok, So I'm good with getting my SanDisk Extreme III 4 GB Compact Flash Card for $229?

Sure, it that's what you want. $229 sounds like a pretty good price for those high-speed Extreme III cards, too.

But personally, I'd rather get 8 512mb cards for about $30 each, or 4 1gb cards for about $60 each. The total would be a little higher, but there's no way I would put 4gb of my precious WDW vacation pics on a single card!

Your milage may vary, of course.

LOL, I'm an Admin on a totally different vB forum, and I was (as always here) looking for the mod controls to split this thread in two!

Now that this thread has already been completely totally hijacked anyway...

Just because I really don't feel like digging for the info, how much space would an average photo take up with an 8.5MP camera saving both JPEG-H & RAW? 15MB or so? So that would be aprox 66 images on a 1GB card?

Sonno, this thread direction is no problem with me (the op,) i just am along for the ride ( and you just asked one of my questions :thumbsup2 )
