I got an e-mail today that said it was from ebay. The email said:
"Due to recent account takeovers and unauthorized listings, eBay is introducing a new account verification method. From time to time, randomly selected accounts (seller and/or buyer) are subjected to an advanced verification process based on our merchant accounts/bank relations and customers credit card. eBay may also request in an email message scanned/faxed copies of one or more photo ID's. Your account confirmation may go wrong if your credit card/bank account is expired, or if you have changed your credit card number, billing address etc. without notifying us about the change. Subject of this verification process are also the accounts that have unpaid dues to eBay.
Your account is not suspended, but if in 48 hours after you receive this message your account is not confirmed we reserve the right to suspend your eBay registration."
The link in the email read "signin.ebay.com/aw-cgi......." but when I clicked it I was taken to a website that looked like ebay but the address window read: bassfineart.com/help/ebay. I have heard of scams to get your account info. and this just seemed fishy. Am I being overly precautious? Has anyone else ever gotten these?

Its a scam.

Do not click the blue words in the email message. If you did so by accident, do not enter your user id, password, bank account no, social security no, etc.

If things change on eBay, you will see them during the normal eBay usage process starting with manually typing ebay.com into the usual URL space at the top of your browser.

Oh gosh, I did click but didn't enter any info when I saw that they wanted all my personal info, account info and even bank acct #. Then I noticed that the address read bassfineart.com and not ebay.com so I left!

Can you cause problems just by clicking on the link?

You should be ok so long as you didn't put any of your personal information in. Just for future reference, any email asking you so send your personal information should never be answered. If your bank, credit card company or ebay send you things like this, call them and ask why. You will find that that didn't send the email.
