Ebay question: Am I the only one not bothered...

if someone else uses my picture or description. I've had a few people copy my picture and one use my description. And I've seen people get very upset about this. It just doesn't bother me though. What are your thoughts?

I must admit, I have used someone elses pictures, but only 2-3 times, and only once it was an original picture. The others were photos that they got from somewhere else.

When I take the time and effort to photograph, upload and list something I am selling, then yes it bothers me. I don't need to be competing with someone else who is using my words and pictures. I also don't need them stealing my bandwidth.

Well, technically it's against the rules. I always take my own photos.

It doesn't bother me if they are selling an item after I sell mine because there was a time when I didn't have a digital camera and still sold on ebay minus pictures (the horror lol). Perhaps that person doesn't have one - or they could just be lazy. They should ask permission, though.

I have reported people in the past when I used to sell information and a few people bought my book from me and then sold it as their own. Now that is unacceptable to me.

It bothers me as a buyer because the pictures are part of the information I use when deciding the condition of an item I am thinking of buying.
If I am buying something from x seller, but the pictures and description are really from y seller's auction, how am I to know which one is truthful (and I have seen 2 auctions both active, both using the same pictures and descriptions).

I've never known of someone using my pictures or descriptions, but it would bother me.

I do know of one website that does allow people to use pictures from them as long as credit is given to the site in the auction (which I have done).

One thing that you could do is to watermark the pictures -- put some text or something that identifies you as the originator. That way when they do use your image a potential buyer may wonder "why does xxxx's auction have an image with yyyy's name?" And if they say "used with permission" when they don't, contact eBay.

Or even better! Replace it with something embarassing. If someone steals your picture and you've sold the item, but they're linking to your hosting site, change the image under that name to something like a sign that says "this person steals other's images without permission for their own use - buy at your own risk."
