Ebay purchase gone wrong- how do refunds work?

I buy a lot on ebay to save $, but I've only returned one thing a long time ago. This purchase was a pair of shoes listed as New with Box, which I was buying for a gift. There were photos of the box, the top, and the side of the shoes, so I made a best offer that was accepted. I messaged seller with payment saying this was a gift, so please ship right away. Today I received the shoes. The soles are literally filthy...not tried on in the store filthy, but worn every day for a month and then put back in the box filthy. So, I filled out the refund request ebay form. It says that "this seller does does accept returns". What happens now, and will I be responsible for the return shipping cost?

If you have questions don't hesitate to call eBay to make sure you are doing everything right. Don't let the seller bully you into paying the return shipping as per the above guarantee you should not have to pay it.

You need to file a "significantly not as described" claim. You might be on the hook for shipping it back, but sometimes eBay will cover the charges.

You can escalate it to an "item not as described" dispute, either thru eBay or PayPal. Make sure that you have multiple photos of the item. In most instances, eBay/PayPal will side with the buyer.
