Okay - tell me what you think of this.

The ebayer bought a handmade costume dress (I did not make it), wore it, washed it, and one of the grommets (I'm guessing, since the dress doesn't even have buttons) fell off. Here is the message the buyer sent to me:

"Hiya! I'm really pleased with your customer service, the item
shipped quickly and it fits great, VERY flattering. My only
problem is that one of the buttons fell off after one wear and
now I can't find it. I hand-washed this and treated it very gently
and I'm disappointed."

I don't feel that I am responsible for this. I am sorry that she's disappointed, but I have no idea how she wore it, if it even fit correctly, and how she treated the dress. It shouldn't have been washed, it should have been dry cleaned. How do I respond to this? It's a very easy fix, and very cheap. If you take it to a tailor shop, they could easily fix it as well. Thanks everyone!

ETA: the auction ended on October 14th, and the buyer just emailed me today about it.

Maybe "flattering" means "managed to squeeze myself into it.... and then a button popped off and I can't figure out why" :confused3

I generally think the best of folks, so would take her at her word, but.....it's just a button (grommets? How strange she wrote button...perhaps she wrote to the wrong person? I would ask her about that for sure, though perhaps she just doesn't know the word for it) Anyway.....its a simple fix, and could happen to any clothing item with no poor care and with no major reflection on it's quality.

Offer to send her a button/grommet (simply for good ebay relations, lol) or perhaps find relevant links to websites which talk about sewing buttons, etc. And tell her this:

"I'm sorry a button/grommet came off after one wearing, but this item was clearly marked "dry clean only". Hand washing is not recommended for delicate items such as this."

People floor me. Honestly.

I couldn't imagine writing to an eBay seller, after I wore something, and tell them I lost a button, can't find it and am 'disappointed'. Weird.

I don't have advice. But I feel your irritation.

You know, I'd be tempted to write back "I'm very sorry to hear this, however the item should have been dry cleaned. I'm unclear on what you're expecting me to do about this? I do not have any extra buttons, if I did, I would absolutely send them to you"

What does she want?? That's what I'd want to know.

Or you could just do a:

"Glad you like it! Sorry to hear about the button, that stinks!"

And be done.

Since there are no buttons, I would assume she doesn't mean to write to you, or she's been scammy. "There were no buttons on this garment."

You have no responsibility anymore. Auction ended, they paid, you shipped, they received item and were satisfied. You don't owe the customer anything, and they don't have any right to claim anything from you.

:thumbsup2agreed!

Save the correspondence to protect yourself against a claim for a PP chargeback!

Did your description, or a tag on the product, say that the outfit should be dry cleaned? If so, there's your answer. "I'm sorry about the button (did you mean grommet, as the garment has no buttons?) but as I pointed out, this outfit was supposed to be dry cleaned, not washed."

Thanks everyone! I even had free shipping on the thing. The auction ended at $150.00, so I really hope that she's not trying to scam me. I mean, she wore it, broke it, and then (perhaps) now wants to return it? I really hate how ebay mostly sides with the buyer and the sellers get screwed over.

So I think I'm going to email her and tell her I'll mail her a new grommet with instructions on how to put it on.

Okay - now this is getting weird. I just went to the my ebay section to write the buyer back, and saw this message from ebay that I've never seen before:

Activity with waterhousesmuse (last 90 days): I have bid on 0 items from waterhousesmuse
Activity with waterhousesmuse (last 90 days): waterhousesmuse has bid on 0 of my items

??? This person that has sent me the message hasn't bid on any of my items! So I went to the original auction and saw that a completely different user name bought the dress. I recognized the username because this person sent me questions about the measurements of the dress, so I just automatically thought that this person was the buyer - they're not! HUH??? So I wrote back:

Hi, I'm not sure what this is in reference to, as ebay has no record of you winning or bidding on any of my items. Please give me some more info so I can be of some help. Thanks so much!

I'm even more perplexed now!! What the heck is going on? Should I send a scam message to ebay?

It's probably a mistake on her part. The ID number should be your cue. Just let her know she's in error. She cannot hurt you if she hasn't done busines from you, on eBay or on Paypal.

Kinda crazy, don't you think? Is there any way to see what a person has bid on?
