I'm getting up the nerve to finally start ebaying the stuff I having laying around the house. I've done the ebay tour, looked at the big ebay threads (my word!, they're HUGE!!!), and signed up for paypal. I'm wondering if any of the "Ebay pros" out there could pass along some wisdom. Some " I would have done it differently, had I only known...." type wisdom.

I appreciate all your comments and look forward to reading them!

Thanks!

There's an enormous ebay thread around here somewhere...

I'm about to take the plunge myself. I have the new checking account and digital camera and all I have to do is set up Paypal. I'm a bit nervous to be honest.

Good luck!

HI. I'm a new ebay seller. My advice would be to do a search first for the items you are thinking of selling and ask for completed items. This will show you what sold and what didn't, how much, how many bidders, etc. That way you MIGHT avoid posting and paying for something that doesn't sell.

It takes lots of time to create your listing. Be sure you have all your information gathered in front of you. Include things like measurements, brand names, washing instructions in your descriptions.

I package up all my stuff for shipment before my auctions end. That way all I need to do is complete the shipping label and tape up the boxes. Be sure your payment requirements are listed very clearly. List them in your item description as well as in the payment section. jmo.

Good luck! I hope you do well. I do okay. The fees kill me!

I have been selling on eBay for about 4 years now and here is my list of do's and dont's:

DO sign up for PayPal as alot of buyers prefer it.

DON'T upgrade to a 'business' or 'premier' account. PayPal makes these sound so sweet and all they do is drain funds from your pockets. The only difference is that you can accept credit/debit card payments on a premier/business account. They charge you $.30 plus 2.9% for each transaction. Once you have upgraded, the fees apply to ALL of your transactions, not just the cc pymts. Total waste of money and I've never had a single complaint in 4 years that I didn't accept credit cards (cc's). If people want the item, they can and WILL pay with their checking account or PayPal balance.

DO accept money orders, cashiers checks and even personal checks. This increases your chances of having more bidders. On personal checks - deposit them in your bank account, wait at least 14 days and then ship the item, that way you know the check has cleared. Make sure to state the 14 day delay in your auction terms. That way if they don't want to wait for shipping, they can get a money order.

DO give very detailed descriptions. This cuts down on the number of emails you will have to answer regarding questions about your item and also makes bidders want to bid on your item instead of looking for a 'better' (described) one. Some people don't want to wait for an email reply. Remember, we all want it NOW.

DON'T have automatic payments of eBay fees deducted from your credit card or checking account each month. Pay your fees with your paypal balance. eBay has been known to charge way in excess of your actual account balance to your CC or checking account which could cause overdraft charges for you. This has been happening quite frequently with the use of their new billing system. Some people have been charged THOUSANDS more than what they owe. Imagine trying to fix that mess!

DON'T overcharge on shipping and handling rates. This is a huge turn-off to buyers and they will just buy another auction with better S&H fees. I usually charge actual cost plus $.50. You will learn with time what the costs will be on an item. It will get easier to guess at it. Or you can go to USPS.com and find out for sure as long as you have the weight and measurment of th package.

DO time your auctions to end on a weekend. More people are home on the weekends to be able to see your auctions. Plus, most people get paid on Friday - so they have money to spend.

DO make sure your items are clean and in good condition. If there are any flaws, be sure to state them.

DON'T go into this thinking that you will always have 100% feedback. While some do manage this trick, for the most part, you are always going to have a bad apple that doesn't care about your feedback rating and will leave you a negative no matter how hard you try to please him. Always try to work out problems beforehand.

DON'T be scared to leave a negative feedback for fear that you will get one in return. Chances are - you will. But buyers KNOW this and will run over you. If you just don't leave that person any feedback and the transaction went sour then the next seller who sells to this person was not given fair warning. If you get a negative in return, chances are, that most ppl who read the feedback will see right through it.

DON'T use the eBay discussion boards unless you are related to God. These boards are ruled by a certain group of eBayers who think their opinion is law. They are rude and not very helpful. Instead of posting my own question, I just read through eBays FAQ or other posted questions to get my answer. I don't care to deal with a group of ruthless sharks. You WILL get trashed if you ask the most simple questions on these boards.

DO try to sell ANYTHING. I have shipped a goat skull to Switzerland. So anything will sell. My father owns a slaughterhouse and he throws them away. I now sell them for around $35 each. You never know.

DO sell clothing in LOTS instead of single pieces. It saves the buyer on shipping that way and makes it worth more to them.

DO have fun. eBay is nothing but extra money. I personally only accept mailed payments because there is nothing better than going to the mail everyday and getting checks and money orders. It's like my own business. I do accept paypal on enough auctions to cover my ebay fees each month, but the rest I require to be mailed to me.

If you have anymore questions, just ask. I'll be happy to assist.

HMG,
One quick question about Paypal. When I signed up for my Premier account (years ago), I did so b/c the description of the regular account said you could only accept up to a few hundred dollars per year with that account. Has that changed?

I wonder if I can set up another account that doesn't accept Credit Card payments and just use the one I have now for credit card payments only. I would love to not pay PayPal fees, especially since Ebay double dips and gets my money in Ebay fees and PayPal charges. Hmmm.....

I agree with all but the cashier's checks due to the recent frauds. Our consumer report scared me away from accepting them. eBay only allows for you to click on money orders AND cashier's checks so I have to note it in my description. So far so good. http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2003/12/05/eveningnews/consumer/main587162.shtml

The only difference between money ordres and cashiers checks is the latter is over $1,000.00

Can you change your present account from a premier account to a personal account? Or do you have to register with a brand new name??

who is nervous about starting to sell on e-bay!

I've got a huge pile of items that I've set aside to sell.
I've opened a seperate checking acct.
I've collected boxes of variouis sizes.
I've got a scale and a digital camera but...........
I've yet to even sign up to sell on e-bay!

I'm such a big chicken!

My husband asked me WHAT I'm afraid of. I guess I fear doing something wrong and getting negative feedback. I also fear losing more money than I make.

I know I have to read all the "getting started on e-bay" and e-bay for dummies" threads and also do the getting started tutor on e-bay. That will build my confidence and give me incentive to post my first sale.
Thanks to everyone for the great & easy to understand info on this thread!

For those who are just starting on e-bay...

I registered and bought a few things before I listed anything.
As a buyer I would really hesitate to buy anything from someone who has 0 feedback. In fact the only way I would do it is if it were a very inexpensive item or if I could pay with a CC to get added protection.

Great Advice HMG!!!

I'm another who has been considering selling on Ebay for about a year. I'm just about ready to take the plunge!! Good Luck to all who are going to go for it!!

I have been thinking about selling also. I have been buying for 4 years. This is what I have come up with so far (in addition to what has already been posted) ........

If you do need to use their discussion boards, set up a separate "posting id" that is nothing like your regular ID.

DO NOT write a book about your TOS! I refuse to read all that "fine print" that some people insist on putting in. You know, the "i've-been-burned-too-many-times-so-I-will-report-you-to ebay" stuff. I hate it when the TOS is longer than the actual item description. It goes without saying - if you are buying/selling on ebay & if there should be a problem, those are steps that need to be taken. Also, watch your wording. I hate it when I see the "Do NOT bid on my auction if you have ANY negative feedback. If you do, I will cancel your bid & report you to ebay." stuff.

Please do NOT use all the extra cutsie stuff in your auction page. When you add the music, the pictures of the last snow storm, the pictures of your kids, the things that travel around your cursor, the clip art, etc... That stuff is annoying to most & can make your page load MUCH slower. If someone is too impatient to wait for your page to load, they won't even look at your auction. If they don't look, they are not going to bid. Watch the size & color & kind of font you use. I have seen pages written in red with the largest possible font. The auction doesn't even fit on the page without have to scroll left & right!! I have also seen pages written in the smallest possible font in grey. Do sellers really think people want to or can read that??????
Also, do not write up your auction in all CAPS!!

I prefer the premier account account with PayPal.....people sometimes bid higher if they know they can use their credit cards for payments. I don't like to leave very much money in my PayPal account and it takes 3-5 days for me to transfer money to my account....so its much easier to pay by credit card.

I also do not accept personal checks....all it takes is one to bounce and my bank would charge me $25. Not worth it to me. And you have no way of knowing if the check will bounce or not.

I do not sell outside the USA and that makes the post office trips faster and prevents some of the scams that are going around with foreign buyers and cashier checks.

Do invest in a scale. Its so much easier to package the item and weigh it so as to figure postage before you list.

Downloading the Shipping Assistant from the US Postal site is a great tool and makes adding delivery confirmation cheaper.

Total waste of money and I've never had a single complaint in 4 years that I didn't accept credit cards (cc's)
Lots of good advice, but I don't agree with this. As soon as I started taking credit cards, my sales went up and so did my sell through rate. I personally do not bid on an item if they don't take cc's (for my protection), and I KNOW I spend more being able to use a CC. The amount you pay to Paypal is well worth it IMO, and of course tax deductible, so the fees end up a tad lower.

One you upgrade or sign up for a premier account you can "downgrade" ONE time to a regular account. After that, if you upgrade again, you are stuck with it unless you open a separate account. You must use different credentials when opening a separate account. FOr example, you cannot use the same credit card on 2 different accounts.

As far as people bidding higher if they can use credit cards through paypal. This may be true, but in my experience I don't see any of that extra money because when the bids are higher - so are the fees.

I just prefer to keep the money in my pocket. If I pay those fees, I'm doing nothing but giving money away. I do agree that more people DO accept cc pymts through paypal - but was giving my opinion on the fact that it's a waste of money.

Besides, I feel this protects me, as the seller. I do not have to worry about chargebacks that can happen up to 6 months after an auction is paid for. I know going into this that I am an honest seller and my feedback even states so. Therefore I don't worry about if my buyers feel concerned about not being able to pay with a cc.

Also make note that as a seller if you only ship once a week (and alot of ppl do) that if you don't ship within 7 days of payment - you are NOT covered under PayPals seller protection policy. Say you normally ship on Mondays and the current Monday happens to fall as a holiday. When you ship on Tuesday you are currently out of that protection.

IMO, paypal is a convenient way to buy and pay for goods, but paypal doesn't take care of you - they are in business to take care of themselves - as all business's are.

One example that happened to me about a year ago -

I was going on vacation and had no auction listings going because I knew I wouldnt be at my computer. During my vacation a paypal seller claims they did NOT receive their goods. This was for a purchase for over $400. Paypal emails me and notify's me that I have 5 days to respond with proof of delivery or they will araed the buyer the funds back. Since I was gone, I had no idea this had happened so I didn't respond within 5 days. The next thing I know is that my checking account has a $400+ deduction from it while I'm on vacation!! Since the whole amount was not in my paypal account they pulled the funds from my checking account - no warning whatsoever except for the email which I was not there to check. It took over a month to get those funds back and we actually had to leave our vacation early because we were out of money. It's situations like this as to why I don't accept PayPal. There is so many little things that can go wrong and I simply wish to avoid the hassle, even if it means I have to accept a few cents less on my auctions to aviod using paypal.

Re: the above post, attach your Paypal account to a different bank account than the one you use for household expenses, paycheck deposits, vacations, etc.

This may be true, but in my experience I don't see any of that extra money because when the bids are higher - so are the fees.

Your kidding right? If you hadn't mentioned that $400 item I would assume you sell $2 items. I know if I sell someething for more..the extra fees from Paypal (or even eBay) are well covered and certainly don't matter. It's like someone complaining about paying estate taxes after someone dies. Good grief, give me your inheritance and I'll pay the taxes LOL. I WANT my items to go for more...and I sure saw them do it, once I accepted cc.

Besides, I feel this protects me, as the seller. I do not have to worry about chargebacks that can happen up to 6 months after an auction is paid for.
I've been selling for about 5 years and never had a chargeback. But if it happened I would deal with it. After all Paypal protects me too, when I'm a buyer instead of a seller.

In regards to the extra fees when accepting credit cards through paypal. You can help reduce those fees by getting a paypal visa debit card. Any transaction where you use the card to purchase items as you would with a credit card (pinless transactions), paypal weill rebate you 1.5% of the transaction in cash to your account. I have been known to transfer funds into my paypal account from my checking account just to get the 1.5% cash back bonus. This basically reduces the 2.9% cc fee to 1.4 %, plus transferring money in to make payments on big items (such as tuition) gives me added cash in the account to offset the fees they are charging.

Who would have thought we would love tuition fees? We used a cc that gives us 5% off on GM products or one that gives us 2.5% off on any brand vehicle, so my papal cc falls by the wayside...they just don't give me enough incentive to use it LOL!
