I have found myself in a very odd situation with ebay ... and I was hoping some of you wonderful people can help.

I started "ebaying" quite a while ago (as a way to fund my disney habbit!). I have a feedback of 255 with a mixture of selling and buying. So far, other then a few non-paying bidders, it has generally been a good experience for me, until recently.

A few weeks ago I received a very odd email asking where an item was (apparently, they had paid for something via paypal). I had not sold anything in weeks, and only bought a few items and figured it was a mix up. I emailed them back, explaining they had the wrong person and wished them well. A week ago I receieved yet another email, wanting their item. They forwarded a copy of an email "I" had sent them from Dec. 23 saying the item was on its way. The signature was my user i.d. (which is probably where they got my email from).

No one has my account information and this item was not sold using my ebay account (according to ebay) but the person is signing their emails with my user name (if that makes any sense).

Is there anything I should be doing at this point? I am lost as to what since this isn't my item, never listed it, have no idea what they are talking about ... I am just afraid of being blamed for everything. Any advice would be very appreciated!

Thank you :)

Tell them in a short email that you did not list that item, you did not sell that item, and you did not receive payment for that item. Then sit back and wait.

Optional: Ask them for the eBay item number, not in the form of a yes/no question.

In the event eBay or PayPal should contact you, tell them the same th ing you told the "buyer". Even though PayPal is a division of eBay, reply separately to each inquiry from either of them.

Since the item is not yours they cannot give you bad feedback.

Do not click the blue words in an email message regarding your account information. Instead go to the site yourself by hand typing ebay.com or paypal.com or amazon.com or whatever site the email message seems to have come from and check for any problems directly.

I'm not sure, but this could be spam. I have received strange emails from paypal as if I bought something (& I didn't).

Here is a good place to start: http://pages.ebay.com/help/confidence/isgw-fraud-receiving-payments.html It is part of the eBay HELP system. Save all the e-mails that you receive from this person so you can forward them (with full headers) to eBay if necessary. Ask the person on the other end to reforward the e-mails to you with "full headers". They can be used to track the actual source of the e-mail.

Thank You :flower:

I have tried to tell them it wasn't me, but I think being upset over a missing item more on their mind. I asked for a copy of the original auction (to point out to them it wasn't my user name) but no such luck. I have everything saved, just in case ebay comes knocking though!

Thank you for calming my fears down!!

I would not waste my time doing test mailings, analyzing headers, or tracking down senders, except to satisfy my curiosity.
