My sister has terrible migraines, and has recently started doing the program outlined in this book. She has to avoid citrus, onion, nitrates, and certain seasonings etc. Its probably a long shot, but I was wondering if anyone on Dis is following/has followed this specific program in the past.....and has any suggestions for eating at Disneyland. Thanks!

P.S. We don't usually do full service restaurants, so its not really an "ask the chef" situation. Although we do want to try Carnation Cafe....

I have not tried that diet. I'm curious to hear how it works for her To prevent migraines when I was in WDW, I brought Migraine Ice with me. It's like a menthol patch that sticks to you. I only needed it one day but it really helped. I just put it on the back of my neck and continued to go on the mellow rides. I feel for your sis because a migraine can really knock you out for the day. Good luck.

Actually you certainly could call Disney Dining and ask to be put through to the chef who speaks to people with food issues. They will call you back, so be specific in the message you leave.

Other than that, there are ingredient books at every restaurant that you can ask to peek at.

Remember, you can bring food in. If you need a big cooler, rent a locker over in the picnic area, outside of the security area over to the left as you come through DTD towards bag check. It's behind some trees, so just go over to the left and you should figure it out. :)

You know what, I've never even heard of this diet, maybe I need to check into it though. Interesting....but I bet almost everything I like to eat is on that list. LOL

I hope your DSis doesn't get any migraines while there, it can really ruin your vacation.

I saw a neurologist for my migraines. I'm on a prescription that prevents them. There's a side bonus -- I've lost weight on it too! Best of luck -- I would call & talk to the chef about the dietary needs -- they sound pretty specific. It's going to be tough to meed those unless you call ahead or bring your own food.

Thanks so much everyone. I had no idea about the ingredient books at the restaurants. And calling ahead to talk to the chef sounds like a really good idea. I'll pass along all your kind wishes to my sister. She is trying to break her 3x per week Imatrex habit, which she has used for many, MANY years. She is pretty sure some of the current migraines are rebound headaches from the medication.

She should also talk to her neurologist. The thing I'm on PREVENTS the migraines so I don't take Imatrex every stinking day...and like I said the weight loss thing doesn't hurt. Every time my sister finds out that I bought a pair of jeans in a smaller size she swears that her head hurts....

I have not tried the specific diet in the book, but I have tried modifying my diet many times in many ways but with no success. Food (other than alcohol) is not really a big culprit in triggering my migraines. Mine are usually related to hormones, stress/excitement, and sensory overload--most often a combination of those. Obviously, DL is a place that can be hard on a migraine sufferer.

I have had horrible migraines since I was 6. They've changed over the years but unfortunately, I still get them frequently. My neurologist even enrolled me in a Botox study but that didn't work for me. Imitrex injections are the only things that work for me consistently, and I think of them as miracle drugs. I think back to the old days before Imitrex with a shudder!

I have tried Beta blockers and other preventive prescriptions (Elavil and I forget what else). I do not seem to tolerate medications well and had very bad reactions to all of them. In addition, I hate taking medication every day that totally changes my body chemistry in weird ways.

About 6 months ago, I began having rebound migraines. I'd end up using the injections for days in a row. So, my doctor started me on...hmmm, what was the name of it? It's a seizure medication...I can't think of the name of it at the moment, but it seemed to work pretty well. However, I really didn't like the idea of altering my brain chemistry and had avoided trying this medication for that reason. There is one that does the same thing called Topamax. Anyway, I began to notice that I was gaining weight. After 3 months I was 15 lbs heavier and not eating more so I began to realize that it might be the medication. Did some research, asked my doctor, and sure enough--it was the meds! The average person gains 60 lbs in a year on it! Sorry, but I'll endure the headaches rather than gain a bunch of weight. It also made me foggy, but Topamax is supposed to be even worse (it's nicknamed Dopamax). The advantage to Topamax is that its side effect is weight loss rather than weight gain, so I could put up with fogginess for that :lmao:. Unfortunately for me, I can't take Topamax because it also triggers kidney stones and since I'm a chronic stone maker, my doc said no.

So....we looked into it, and guess what? My rebound headaches started after Imitrex lost their patent or whatever it's called and pharmacies began offering a generic version. Turns out my insurance company tells the pharmacy they must use generic unless specifically advised not to by the physician, so I'd been using generic. Well guess what? The generic doesn't work for me like the real McCoy! It takes away the headache for a few hours and then I get it back, and back, and back, in a vicious cycle. Maybe your sister has run into that same problem?

I stopped the...Depakote! That's the name of the seizure med I was taking...I weaned off that and my doctor specified non-generic Imitrex and I'm back to my old pattern, which while not great is at least predictable and treatable without rebounding. Have your sister make sure she's getting name-brand Imitrex if she is having a problem with rebounding.

ETA: I worked hard at it this summer and lost the 15 lbs plus another 8 so all's well that ends well

I have been getting debilitating migraines since high school so went to a Neurologist who has also put me on a preventative medication nortriptyline (but it doesn't seem to affect weight in any way, but it can cause a BIT of drowsiness so I take it at night). Generally speaking it does work well but My biggest cause is eye strain and stress. Dehydration is also a major factor. If I don't drink enough by the afternoon I will be suffering. Staying Hydrated is something so easy to forget but it is something that really can help.

I have avoided Imatrex the whole time because I knew of the issues with it. Generally I will take a codeine/ibuprofen tablet. If I'm desperate Higher dose Codeine is my knock out punch for worst ones but even that can't kill some and it sends you a bit groggy once you get to a certain point.

I would love it if food exclusions helped but it doesn't seem to for me.
I have stopped having soda pretty much but caffeine doesn't seem to be a significant issue as Coffee (which I only have rarely) doesn't seem to impact it.

Physical factors are the thing for me.

I hope it works for your sister though and I agree with calling!! Hopefully they will help you :)

Well, I guess I'll tell my story. I have had migraines that have become increasingly worse for about 8 years. I have tried about 6 different preventive meds, (including Topamax, and yes, I lost some weight. The doctor said some women lose so much weight that he takes them off it.) None of them have worked. I take Zomig or Treximet now, but am afraid I am getting rebound headaches. I am going to my neurologist on Tuesday and I hope he will hear me out. I am taking way too many pills and my stomach is upset a lot probably because of the Treximet. I have been on the headache diet and sadly it didn't work. Interesting reading all the stories...

I LOVE this product; it works temporarily I find, but works instantaneously and extremely well. I have hormonal migraine type headaches a couple of times a month and it helps tremendously. I can no longer take migraine meds since I am on SJW so this has been a huge help since you don't suffer the rebound medicine effect since you're not taking tylenol and advil to try to conquer the headache.

In Canada, you can buy it at well.ca and they have free shipping.

just thought i'd throw this in since everyone else is discussing what might work for migraines...

i basically got migraines all my life as well (i can even remember getting them on the school bus in the mornings on the way to kindergarten!).

i never ended up trying prescription meds for them, just kept suffering through. then, 2 years ago, i tried low-carb dieting and in addition to other benefits, my migraines disappeared and never came back, even though i didn't stay on low carb forever. well, i guess it would be more accurate to say i've gotten a few migraines since then, but i used to get terrible ones about once a month, and regular headaches daily. now, i rarely even get regular headaches.

just thought i'd mention it incase it could help anybody else. after a lifetime of headaches and migraines, it was an unexpected, but very welcome, side effect of low carb eating.
