Hubby and I love watching the Food Network and Travel channels. On the Travel Channel, there's a show called Man vs. Food, where every episode he takes on some sort of an eating challenge, whether it's spice, quantity, etc. Well, dear hubby is always claiming he can out do the host, and in a weak moment, I let him know about the Kitchen Sink Sundae at the DLR. He sees it as HIS challenge.

I think he's more pumped about taking on this Sundae than he is about our trip next month!!!

Has anyone managed to take this thing on solo? Were you sick afterwards? Would lactose intolerance medicine help him, even if he's not lactose intolerant?

I'm happy he's so excited about this, and I'm excited to see him go at it (I think he's got no chance, but it will be lots of fun), but there's a tiny part of me that's worried he's going to be pretty sick that night or the next day. Any advice? :flower3:

Don't know about the rest of your questions. But I'm lactose intolerant, and I doubt that the "medicine" would make a difference. It's actually just the enzyme lactase, which folks like me can't produce any more. If your DH isn't lactose intolerant, then he probably produces all the lactase he'll need. It's an enzyme, which means it's not consumed when it breaks down lactose; it's just a helper molecule. When it's done with its job, it's still available for to digest additional lactose.

It's at the PCH Grill -

10 scoops of ice cream with tons of toppings, served in a kitchen sink. There are pictures in the food thread, I think, but I can't find them now. All I know is it's massive!!

Thanks Bob! I wasn't sure. I've always heard that people can't drink a gallon of milk in one sitting without getting sick, so I figured 10 scoops of ice cream would be along the same lines. But your knowledge is useful. :)

I guess he'll just have to tough it out if he feels sick. ;)

You're welcome, Pezalicious.

Actually, your example made me think about when I discovered I was lactose intolerant. It's easy to miss. I was, um, producing gas when eating a lot of ice cream, yoghurt, etc; but never associated with lactose intolerance. But then I tried the pills, and my wife really appreciated the difference! :rotfl2: (She's also lactose intolerant, BTW).

I guess what I'm saying is that the pills won't hurt; and he could be mildly lactose intolerant without knowing it. So he could test it by drinking a lot of milk and seeing if he has a problem. Then take a pill or two and try it again. If he is even mildly lactose intolerant, then he'll want them for a 10 scoop ice cream dessert!

OMG! My dh loves this show! He and my 10 yo son love watching it. They have even visited numerous of the restaurants here in the Bay Area that the "Man vs Food" guy has been to. :thumbsup2

I'm lactose intolerant too. Just happened about 5 years ago. I noticed I felt sick and had cramps after I had my cereal in the morning. I started thinking about what I was eating and it wasn't the coffee. I can have one spoon of ice cream without taking a pill, but more than that I need my pill. If someone isn't lactose intolerant I would think the sickness would come just from eating too much. :rotfl:

Although, I have to point out, that there are different levels of lactose intolerance. I must have a little amount of enzyme in me because like I said, I can have a spoonful of ice cream without problem. I also can eat cheese in a sandwhich or on pizza. It might be possible to reach your limit in 10 scoops. :confused3

Maybe after he has had his challange you all can help him. ;)
