So, Canadian Thanksgiving was October 12th this year. We always go visit family and the turkey meal always leaves something to be desired. DMiL, bless her heart always serves up a dry, salty turkey. Also the stuffing tastes weird. And the potatoes are lumpy. And my sister in law gets really disgusting buns. Yes, I AM as hard to please as I sound. Anyway, that's what happens on his side of the family. My mom doesn't care for turkey, so she stopped serving it altogether about eight years ago! Who wants to celebrate Thanksgiving with lamb chops? Or a nice pork loin? The food is great...but not on theme. So no matter where we go, we don't get the delicious turkey meal we love at Thanksgiving.

So, we eventually (out of self preservation) started having our own turkey dinner (done right) later on in the month of October.

Our luscious 15 pound bird was cleaned, cooked and consumed this past Sunday night! DH and I both had seconds. It was worth the wait. Cooked just the way we like it. Moist. Succulent. <insert Homer Simpson drool here> Why don't we do this EVERY Sunday night?

ANYWAY...

My kids won't touch turkey with a ten foot pole. And that means we have a LOT of meat left over. I picked the carcass as cleanly as I could and divvied up the bones to make THREE batches of soup stock. I bagged up 2 cups of meat (each) in six freezer bags (3 white/3 dark). We had leftovers on Monday night. And for lunch again today. And there's still a bunch of meat in the fridge. I love being frugal!

Wednesday-broccoli cheddar soup and sausages, hummus and veggies, grilled cheese sammies for the kids

So I finally got paid and could afford to go to the grocery! We just had a new Market District open up around here so I decided to check it out. OMG. I am in love!!! I think they will be my choice for the weeks that I get my meats and stuff, so every other week. Does anyone here eat gluten free? I have just made the switch to a gluten free diet and I would love to peruse past GF meal ideas.

I don't eat GF, but I've helped many newly GF friends think about their meal plans. For them, it was easiest to get back to basics 1st (protein, carb, veggie and/or fruit). Rice and potatoes filled the carb role, so they didn't feel they were missing out right away and the proteins were simple grilled dishes (like steak, chicken, fish) or eggs. Once they got down eating this way (and their families, especially kids, accepted it), they got a lot more creative...but they felt starting simply helped make the whole change not so crazy right away (and it let them try the GF products, like bread or pasta, slowly and one at a time without filling a whole pantry with stuff they may not like)...

LOL Thanks for the reply.

I just spent $6.49 for a teeny tiny loaf of GF bread. I'm definitely going to stick to rice, quinoa and potatoes and eat more beans so I don't have to eat more meat to feel full and to save on official GF products which threaten to blast my grocery budget to smithereens.

I've done very well avoiding restaurants and cooking at home, for about 2 weeks anyway! And Weight Watchers is going great! Slow, but sure. Down 36 lbs in 22 weeks. Cooking helps so much. I have a lot of trouble making good choices and eating small portions in restaurants!
Last night we had chili. I used a vegetarian recipe, and added lean ground beef!
The night before we had Salisbury steak and mushroom gravy, from the Skinny Taste site. Yum,
Tonight will probably be beef stew...or something similar in the crock pot.
I have the ingredients to make...
Hamburger sliders
Buffalo chicken in some way
Chicken tikka
Pork tenderloin
Crispy chicken salads
Bagel sandwiches
Homemade pizza
