Came south on Monday (from U.P. to WI to IL to IN to KY etc) and hit a ton of construction and traffic from south of Indianapolis to Louisville (my fault for wanting to see Churchill Downs!).

So going back home we are searching for an alternative route from Louisville to Wi. I really thought I remember seeing on one of those driving threads some way to go back, maybe through IL instead of IN?

Any help would be appreciated!

Consider staying on I-75 all the way from Atlanta to Cincinnati. It's 3-lane through most of Kentucky and I think a much nicer road than I-65 in Kentucky. Near Cincinnati get on I-275 going west and then on I-74 to Indianapolis. That cuts Louisville out entirely, while keeping the northernmost portion of your route intact.

We live in the Indianapolis, and we go the I75/I74 route also. It's been years and years since we've been through Louisville, usually go through Cincinnati.

Yep! Going through Illinois is good way to avoid Louisville and Indianapolis entirely.

When you get to Nashville, take I-24 toward Illinois (via Peducah). In Illinois, I-24 will meet I-57, which you would then take north toward the Chicago area. There, you'll jog over on I-80 to I-294, which will take you toward Wisconsin.

The distance is negligibly longer (just 31 miles more), but'll you be able to avoid Indiana road construction and the delays often encountered in Indianapolis and Gary.

The added bonus is that I-24 is pretty highway.
