I was up at 6:30 but Steve was still dozing so I went down to nab us some cinnamon rolls as they’d always been gone on the other days (I suspect the coach load of pensioners who were also staying in the hotel!) Whale watching was cancelled again so we decided to drive up to Portland in Maine for the day. This took about two hours but nearly $6 in tolls each way, ouch. We passed through New Hampshire on the drive up so that’s two more states we’ve ‘visited’ even if just for a few minutes! We arrived in Portland around midday, parked up (another $8) then wandered to the Casco Bay ferry terminal to catch the ferry to Peak’s Island (very reminiscent of Cabot Cove in Murder She Wrote, which I know was based on various coastal towns in Maine rather than one in particular) We just did the loop back to Portland as the next ferry back after that one was something like two or three hours later and we weren’t sure there was much on the island to amuse us for that long, it was a nice trip though and took about an hour there and back.

Your guess is as good as mine!

Near the ferry terminal there was lots of little stalls with people selling handcrafted goods so I bought some glass candy for my mum and tried a free sample of the cinnamon flavour, strong but nice! By now we were starving as we’d only had a light breakfast so I bought a lobster sandwich from an oceanfront restaurant and Steve walked a bit further down to get a pizza slice then met up with me again to eat. My sandwich was amazing, I’d never eaten lobster before so I figured what better place to try it for the first time than Maine!

The restaurant had this piece of the Berlin wall on display

After lunch we walked to the downtown area, got some more candy as gifts plus fudge for now (pumpkin pie for me and half baked cookie for Steve) from a little sweet shop then stopped at Starbucks for a drink and a restroom (no public ones again!)

We wandered around downtown a bit more but to be honest there wasn’t much else to hold our interest (this was somewhat intentional to give us a bit of a restful day!) so we decided to say goodbye to Portland and drove back to Boston, stopping at Port Elizabeth on the way to take some pictures of the lighthouse.

Steve taking a rare photography break!

In a nearby town we spotted an old fashioned looking ice-cream place so we stopped and got a soft serve with chocolate sprinkles each: We ordered the smallest size but they were huuuge, very nice though! After that little diversion we were back on the road and soon arrived at the hotel. We decided to order takeout for dinner so we asked at reception if they recommended anywhere and they gave us a selection of menus. For the princely sum of $27 we ordered eggplant parmigan with spaghetti, a medium veggie calzone and a garden salad from Sergio’s which arrived very quickly and the portions were massive, I’m sure we could have just shared one of the mains and I suppose it’s times like this that a fridge and microwave come in handy! After dinner Steve walked to Best Buy to get his iPod Touch and we had a nice chilled night in watching an Everybody Hates Chris marathon.
