Earthquake

Sunday night my fiance and I were having a heated philosophical debate about dinner. All of the sudden, a earthquake came through our place, shaking the walls. So of course we were shaken up. It was a 4.7. Well, right now I was websurfing when a small quake came through again. Now I am bracing for a big one to come.

Relax. It's probably just an aftershock. I know my hometown says Kansas, but I was born and lived in California for my first 38 years of life. I know earthquakes are frightening. Hang in there! You'll be o.k.

Former LA resident here - how long have you lived there? There is some theory that many little quakes alleviate the need for a big one. Hang in there! :)

There have been multiple afterschocks but most of them have been pretty small.

The one that just hit was 4.1...more bouncy than Sunday night's...but still quite noticeable.

There's been a lot of talk on the news here about these quakes possibly being a precursor to a big one, since this fault's been pretty quiet for a while.

Basically though...there's no point in worrying about it...just be prepared and know what you are going to do if a big one comes along. :)

Hi fellow ex-Californian. I used to live in West Covina. I have heard the same thing about earthquakes.

To the op, this is a reminder that you should have your emergency disaster kit fully stocked (water, blankets, non perishable food, etc).

I have never really felt a good size quake...however back about 12 or so years ago I did feel a very subtle quake here in NH. It was like, my (then) husband and I just looked at each other like...."what was that?" We found out the next day what it was.

I hope you're ok. stay safe!

Are you in Southern CA? How long have you lived here? I have lived in either northern or southern CA for my entire 35 years. I have bever lost so much as a dish. I have been through some real rattlers too. No big deal to me, we just make sure we don't have anything heavy hanging over our beds. I would relax a little bit. We had a 7.0 about 45 minutes from my house and felt that one pretty good but still nothing to panic over. About the only thing that freaks me out a little are tornadoes. I am not sure I would like to live where those go on but I am sure I would get used to it. I just wouldn't buy a mobile home as those are what seem to get hit rather then regular houses. Not sure why they even allow mobile homes in that part of the country.

For a Floridian, I have an "unnatural" curiousity about quakes. My family is amazed to see charts and graphs bookmarked on my computer...everything dealing with quakes.

A few years ago, a former roommate of mine flew to see me. First thing she said when she saw my house for the first time was, "Wow! You've got sooooo much breakable stuff on your walls"!!! She's from NORTHRIDGE. ;)

Having lived in the San Gabriel Valley for several years and the San Fran Bay area for the first 21 years of my life I can honestly say that I don't ever remember there being a small one leading to the "Big" one. I know they say it can happen, but I don't remember any that were significant.
I can tell you the freakiest thing tho, once I was on the phone in our house in Temple City talking to a friend in Pomona. All of a sudden she says, we are having an earthquake and it took a few seconds then it hit where I was. Now, that was weird!

I have seen damage from small quakes in the late 80's early 90's. All the toilets in our townhouse in San Gabriel broke once from a small quake centered in Sierra Madre and then in the Whittier quake we had no damage living in Arcadia but many of our neighbors did.

We had moved here to NV when Northridge came along, thank goodness. My insurance agent used to tease me, I have earthquake insurance on my house here in NV, it doubles my homeowners policy but when things started shaking here a year ago I was the only one on my block who was not as worried about the "big" one

I grew up in Long Beach Ca, and fell out of my top bunk a couple times.. LOL
When I moved to Northern Ca, I was way above SF, but I did feel the big quake they had when the Bay Bridge Collapsed.
But...as Monique says...now that I've been in Ga for 15 yrs, where there are tornadoes...I'd still rather have an earthquake anyday!!!!

DS & DDIL were in Disneylad when the one hit on Sunday evening. They were just coming down the last staircase at Indy, ready to step onto the platform to be loaded onto a car when it hit. Of course, they evacuated everyone from that ride - and all the rest of the rides! None of the "biggies" reopened on Sunday evening, but everything was back to normal on Monday morning.
