Earthquake in Chili & Tsunami in Asia!

They just scrolled along the tv screen that there was an earthquake in Argentina 6.7.

Ha ha! Love that the CNN guy just called the dork on the beach an idiot!!!

What station are you watching? I have MSNBC on.

I have a friend in Hawaii updating from FB. She says not much going on now, but sirens woke them up, and then their church called all the members.

Ok, that's the most exciting thing that's happened in the last couple of hours!! The reporters are desperately needing something to report!

People are going out onto the beach now...what idiots...just because it hasn't hit yet doesn't mean it's not going to.

Since surges are coming onto the big island as I type..not me

They are saying that the first waves are just hitting now.

I talked to my Mom in HI and they are watching and waiting just like we are. The first waves to hit weren't big, but there could be larger ones to come. So far, so good.

OK I should be more educated on tsunami's because I lived on the coast of Oregon and we got a few watches while I was there, but I'm confused.
CNN says the first Tsunami waves hit Hawaii (that was the little title thing) but the waves don't seem very big? Is there still a threat of damage from flooding? Or possible larger waves to come?

I have been watching the real time earthquake maps and there have been quite a few small earthquakes in California today--and a 4.4 in Oklahoma in the past few minutes. wow.

I wonder if all the snow on the east coast is weighing down that side of the continent :lmao:.

What they have been saying is it could come in waves (no pun intended)..start out small and then some big ones. They were also saying it is not a "wave" in the sense like hollywood shows where the big wall of water comes in..it's more like storm surge from a hurricane or a flash flood where the water rises but the force behind the water surge can cause damage.

I think of what happened on Christmas day and that was an extreme one..so if people are expecting that same thing that will not happen. But a 4 or 5 foot change in water height with force behind it can be deadly and damage property. They also said this could last for hours and not just be one surge.

I'm learning a lot today about tsunami's. I was thinking back to the old Gilligans Island days when the surfer rode in on a tsunami..but the wave died just as it got up to the island :lmao:

Hi...

Rough night here. I thought my roof was going to come down, but my house escaped without much damage other than a bit of broken glass. Power went out about 20 seconds in, leaving a long couple of minutes of shaking and rolling in the dark. My DD9 was downstairs by herself, and is rather traumatized since she's afraid of the dark to begin with. My other DD11 was at a birthday sleepover, so it was a long couple of hours before I could get a line through to reach her. I think it will be many, many nights before I'll be able to get either of them out of my bed.

We are getting regular aftershocks, but nothing even close to what we had last night. I've seen some videos on CNN, and the shaking shown is a pretty good indication of what we went through. Imagine the most intense ride at Disney, and then imagine it exponentially more violent.

DH is away of course, about 8 hours north of Santiago. The airport has sustained major damage and is closed for the near future, and bridges and overpasses have collapsed so he won't be getting back to us any time soon.

Our house phone isn't working, our cells are limited to emergency services only, and my power is still out. Luckily, one of my friends has more important neighbours than I do, so her service has been restored (hence my ability to post).

I hope the tsunami doesn't cause too much damage in other parts of the world. I can guarantee you, just from what I've seen on the streets around my house, that the toll in Chile will be much, much higher than what is being reported. Recovery is going to be very painful, very expensive, and very long-term.

Please keep the people of Chile in your prayers, while I will be keeping everyone along the Pacific coastlines in mine.

Very glad to hear you're safe, we're getting alot of bad news coming out of Chile. I was very worried when I heard how close the earthquake was to some densely populated areas!

Tsunami warnings still in place for NZ, they've ordered larger boats out to deep water as predicted, and reports are coming in of the sea receding at various places around the island which is a pretty good indicator the increasingly larger waves are coming in shortly. They've evacuated some coastal areas. Unfortunately there are idiots who have gone to beach to watch the waves. It sounds as though NZ is ready for the waves though. Only good news out of the South Pacific islands which is great - no deaths or damage reported so far.

I just looked at the USGS map again, there have been over 100 aftershocks in Chile over 5.0 and stronger :scared1:

My heart goes out to the people in Chile and Argentina. My husband travels there frequently. He was just in Argentina 3 days ago, he's in Brazil right now. He travels to a lot of earthquake prone countries :sad2:.
