Earthquake in Chili & Tsunami in Asia!

Hi...

Rough night here. I thought my roof was going to come down, but my house escaped without much damage other than a bit of broken glass. Power went out about 20 seconds in, leaving a long couple of minutes of shaking and rolling in the dark. My DD9 was downstairs by herself, and is rather traumatized since she's afraid of the dark to begin with. My other DD11 was at a birthday sleepover, so it was a long couple of hours before I could get a line through to reach her. I think it will be many, many nights before I'll be able to get either of them out of my bed.

We are getting regular aftershocks, but nothing even close to what we had last night. I've seen some videos on CNN, and the shaking shown is a pretty good indication of what we went through. Imagine the most intense ride at Disney, and then imagine it exponentially more violent.

DH is away of course, about 8 hours north of Santiago. The airport has sustained major damage and is closed for the near future, and bridges and overpasses have collapsed so he won't be getting back to us any time soon.

Our house phone isn't working, our cells are limited to emergency services only, and my power is still out. Luckily, one of my friends has more important neighbours than I do, so her service has been restored (hence my ability to post).

I hope the tsunami doesn't cause too much damage in other parts of the world. I can guarantee you, just from what I've seen on the streets around my house, that the toll in Chile will be much, much higher than what is being reported. Recovery is going to be very painful, very expensive, and very long-term.

Please keep the people of Chile in your prayers, while I will be keeping everyone along the Pacific coastlines in mine.

Have you been in touch with your DH? Is he safe. I can't imagine how frightening this all is for everyone.

I just got an email from my dad. They are fine for the most part. They are docked in Puerto Caldero. They docked 30 minutes late after the tsunami warnings had passed.

Unfortunately my mom is now quarantined because a GIS virus has been spreading through the ship. It's been a bad few days with the code red and yesterday a man jumped overboard. :(
I'm glad they are ok. Hope your Mom is feeling better soon.

Are you LoraJ over on Cruisecritic too? If so, I've been following your thread over there.

Thanks, yes...he managed to get a call through at 8:30 am. He was supposed to be flying back to Santiago tomorrow, but the airport is reportedly going to be closed until at least mid-week. He started to drive back, but was informed that the highway between La Serena (4 hrs north) and Santiago has been closed, so he will be spending the night there. He said he'd call when he got to La Serena, but I haven't heard from him yet. Not really a surprise, though, with all of the phone issues going on.

The girls understandingly want him home, but I think we will all have to be very, very patient.

My Parents live on Maui. Fortunately, they are up in the hillside, and not down near the beach. I talked to my Mom around Noon EST, and they are staying put.....went to the store and got a couple cases of water, etc. (no SPAM, she left that for others to "enjoy")Their bigger fear is the after effects, should it be bad...no power, washed out roads, etc.

My prayers go out to everyone affected by this.

Glad to read your parents are well. Prayers to them and all those in the area.

Wow how incredible!:scared1: So glad your alive.:hug:
All my prayers with you and all people affected.:sad1:
My sister in law is in Honolulu and has gone to high ground. Her house is close to the beach and she knows she could loose everything but is thankful to be alive.
:grouphug:

First waves are expected any time now

KITV is covering Honolulu mostly and it's still too early there according to them. Nothing mentioned about the Big Island yet.

Just watched some of the live video and there is somebody in the water:scared1: Unbelieveable. I hope no rescue workers die trying to get them out:sad2:

Isn't that insane? People are weird. :sad2:

Well, the tsumani is either late or not happening. Hopefully not happening.

I think a lot of it is taped and that some of the pics are not up to date.

Change in the water receding in Coconut Island......oh boy, here we go.

I wonder why the US Geological Survey isn't reporting any information? They're the ones with the measuring instruments. I'd think they'd be able to tell where the most activity is and give an updated prediction of when/if the tsunami will hit land.:confused3

How do they know if the tsunami will happen or not? It's an hour late :lmao:.

The USGS has graphs/charts that show spikes and decreases in water levels, and there was definitely activity. But I guess they not too good at predicting anything, obviously!

Ok, the Tsunami Warning Center oceanographer is speaking...finally some real information besides tv reporters' speculations.

I'm now lost interest in watching. Did everyone enjoy their 1 hr mini-vacation to Hawaii via Skype? ;)

:rotfl: Well, i'm watching a very nicely tanned, buff man sitting on a cliff watching for the tsunami, so it's all good!
