Oh, I am so sorry! I know there has been a phone number posted to call for Americans to try and find out about family members in Chile. I will see if I can find it.

I know there is a Diser that lives in Santiago I've read her post befor i don't know her name but i really do hope she's ok.

Hawai'i is preparing for a tsunami. KCCN in Hawai'i is broadcasting streaming radio that you can listen to http://kccnfm100.com/. Click on "Listen Live" at the top.

I've been listening to this station for about an hour now and they're trying to calm people down. They're not expecting the waves until 11:00am their time which is 4:00pm EST for us. It's good to hear all the information they're giving out and the reassurances they're providing.

While my prayers go out to those caught in the Chile earthquake, my concern right now is for our people in Hawai'i. Hopefully it won't be as bad as they're preparing for.

Where exactly is the Pacific basin? They said there is a Tsunami warning. My parents are on a cruise right now sailing to Costa Rica.

(Okay, I guess that's Hawaii). Hope my friend there gets to higher ground. They are probably all sleeping now.

Here is the phone # I was talking about:

The State Department advises Americans seeking information on family and friends in Chile to contact the Bureau of Consular Affairs at 1-888-407-4747.

Tsunami warnings are in effect for the following places, this is from a post on facebook from "Chile Earthquake".

CHILE / PERU / ECUADOR / COLOMBIA / ANTARCTICA / PANAMA /
COSTA RICA / NICARAGUA / PITCAIRN / HONDURAS / EL SALVADOR /
GUATEMALA / FR. POLYNESIA / MEXICO / COOK ISLANDS / KIRIBATI /
KERMADEC IS / NIUE / NEW ZEALAND / TONGA / AMERICAN SAMOA /
SAMOA / JARVIS IS...

There has already been a Tsunami in a part of Chile. I know the sirens have been sounded in Hawaii and people are evacuating. Also, Australia and Antartica could get a Tsunami as well as Mexico and California!

This is so terrible!

So far 122 dead in Chile.:sad1:

Desnik, is this list partial or complete? I have a brother who lives in Southern China on the coast. When I look at a map there are some smaller islands that might block him but I don't know if they are big enough to prevent the tsunami from reaching him if he were in the path.

Oh great. Are they safer at sea? I am going to be in a panic all day.

Yep, friends and family back home in NZ have been Facebooking the tsunami warnings there, there's a good warning system in place across the Pacific now due to the devastating Boxing Day Tsunami in 2004 so I'm not worried about NZ, it's the small island states that tend to fare poorly.

LoraJ, I'm not an expert, but if it helps, I think tsunamis aren't generally too much of a problem for boats at sea, because at sea a tsunami isn't like a wave as we see it on shore, the water simply suddenly increases in level for a while.

Thank You very much! i'm gonna call my parents and give them his number.

I believe it is only a partial list. I am searching online now for a more complete list......

Well they were supposed to be docked in Costa Rica today. But a man went overboard yesterday which delayed them, so they may possibly still be out at sea.

Feel slightly better.

Are they sailing on the Atlantic or Pacific side of Costa Rica?

Here are the tsunami warnings for Costa Rica:

COSTA RICA CABO MATAPALO 8.4N 83.3W 1344Z 27 FEB
PUERTO QUEPOS 9.4N 84.2W 1417Z 27 FEB

Are they going to any of these ports?
