My DD has a nickel allergy. Thus cannot wear most earrings out there. I would like her to have some Disney type ones, but all are sterling silver. Does anyone know of any hypoallerginic ones that are Disney themed?

I am not sure if your point was that the sterling silver was too much money for a child to have, or that she couldnt wear silver either. I know they have gold jewlery. :) If you feel that she might lose the earings, go to your local jewlery store and have them put screw backs on everything! ;)

Most silver jewelry contains nickel... she'll need to find either gold (14K, not gold filled or plated) or surgical steel posts.

Good luck finding cute earrings for your DD. I developed an allergy to nickel a few years ago, and it sure did cut down on my ability to find fun earrings and other costume jewelry! Even the buckle on my Mickey watch breaks my skin out... I did finally find a stainless steel Mickey watch that I wear every day now! :)

I would suggest you try www.simplywhispers.com I am allergic to everything but I can wear these for extended periods of time. I think they are dong a special if you request a catalog you get a coupon / certificate for a pair of earrings - I think I saw that on this week's freebies thread. good luck

My mom was the sameway. She found some plastic covers that go over the earring posts and plastic backings so it was only the plastic touching her ears. That way she could wear any earrings with out worrying about if they had nickel in them or not.

I have very sensitive ears also. I had read somewhere to paint the earrings with clear nail polish. The only kind of earrings I can get this to work on are the type that just hang in your ears (not posts, just like a bent piece of metal). You might want to give it a try with a pair you already own...

My DD12 has this problem. She has a few pair of gold earrings as her main earrings. She can wear the others for short amounts of time without problems. For example, she will wear them all day at school, then put the golds back in at night.

My DD had her ears pierced about 2 years ago, and had only worn 14k earrings. When we went to WDW she really wanted earrings. We found some for sesitive ears that are supposed to be nickel free. Since I am not sure she is allergic, I can't vouch for them really being hypoallergenic, but she has had no problems with them. We found them at one of the shops on Main Street.

I developed a nickel allergy in college. Now I can't even wear silver, gold, or even plastic or rubber wristwatch-type things for very long. I rarely get to wear my wedding rings - only throw them on when I go out and take them off as soon as I come in. Hardly ever wear earrings anymore, even gold, b/c they itch like crazy from the first minute and get worse from there. For some reason, only my nosering doesn't bother me. (Knock on wood.)

My daughter also found some that are labeled nickel free - I think we got ours in downtown Disney. She definitely has an allergy to nickel, as she breaks out from necklaces, bracelets, rings, and the metal snaps on jeans. She has worn some cheap earrings that were not nickel free and they don't seen to bother her as bad as other parts of her body. Not sure why, but I am glad. Anyway, we always try to stick with nickel free to be on the safe side.

My daughter has the same problem. We found out she was allergic when we took her to the daugther thinking she had ringworm. Turns out she was allergic to the metal snaps on her sleepers. The metal snap on her jeans breaks her out. She had to have "her" chair in kindergarten & 1st grade - the metal "buttons" on the plastic chairs broke her out so we went in with masking tape to cover them up in case she wore a dress, skirt or short.

We finally let her get her ears pierced last year (she's 12 now). She really wants to find some Disney earrings on this trip but I've told her it may not go well.

Be careful with gold earrings. Unless you go with extremely high quality, it can still contain somethings that will bother your ears if your allergic. My stepmom recommened titanium starter studs for DD. The titanium seems to give people with allergies the least amount of trouble.

Thanks so much everyone! In answer to the sterling silver issue or it being too expensive...she can't wear sterling either...bought some mickey heads last june and she can't even put them in for 5 minutes. Have tried the painting with nail polish and that doesn't work. If I can find some that are nickel free and disneyish I will pay whatever for them Cost isn't really the issue. The dermotologist said she had to have 16kt and above, now that could get pricey!
I did subscribe to the simply whispers website and have looked on ebay. The pickins' are slim. Lots and lots of dagles, not appropriate for an 8 year old IMHO.
So I will have my friend who is off to the World next week to look for me.

Thanks again for all the advice and help. I knew I could get it here!

Well, I don't have a nosering to worry with, but I know what you are going through. I have a severe nickel allergy, too.
For those with severe nickel allergy that want to wear jewelry you have to go with 24K gold or platinum.
I could hardly wear my wedding rings either and always had a huge red scaly ring around my finger for days after I did. DH then developed a nickel allergy, also! After a few years, we sucked it up and bought new platinum wedding bands. Not a problem since then. I LOVE being able to wear my wedding ring again. I don't have a solitare to wear anymore (at least not yet).

To the OP-- I think you have some good suggestions here. Your daughter just may not be able to wear the earrings for long periods of time.

Had to add, I should have read ALL the posts before writing...titanium as another suggested may be an option. A jewelry did tell me this. My dermatologist is the one who said only the other two.

I'm also allergic to nickel - when I have to wear a pair of earring that has nickel in it - I get a clear bandaid - cut off one side then cut that part in 2. I then put the post through it and attach it to my ear. I do get a tiny reaction to the post being in my ear - but at least the earring part isn't touching my skin. All my everyday earrings are sterling - but sometimes you just gotta buy some nickel dress up earrings

Request the simply whispers catalog - they have a fairly broad selection of "petite jewelry" you can't tell by the website - they have all kind of cute earrings for little girls. I'm looking at my catalog and there are ballerina slippers, teddy bears, unicorns, flowers, lady bugs, butterflies, etc... If I can wear them with no problem - there's a good chance your daughter can because I'm allegic to everything. I always say when I keel over it will be from an allergic reaction to something.

I developed an allergy to nickel after the birth of my oldest dd. I haven't been able to find any earrings that I can wear including stainless steel and the earrings from Simply Whispers. I can't afford anything in platinum right now, and I haven't tried any 24K gold because I prefer a silver look. I have been eyeing some titanium ones on ebay, so I will give that a try. I can't wear my wedding bands at all. DH has promised to buy me a platinum three stone ring when we have some extra money.

I'm psyched about the poster whose nose ring doesn't bother her! I have been wanting one so bad but afraid of an allergic reaction!

I can't believe no one else knows this (so far)! Walmart sells Disney gold earrings! My DD has the same problem and we've had great luck with the ones from Walmart. They've had Mickey, Minnie, Pooh, Dora, Kim Possible and matching necklaces! They are more expensive, so we make them a present for a birthday or something.

ETA: Tinkerbell, I can't believe I forgot Tink, she's hard to find, saw her once then she was gone!

Thanks for the info about Walmart. I have not seen them down here. I have bought earrings there and I don't recall seeing them. Maybe a regional thing? I am headed there today and will look. Thanks again!
