We are taking DD in December, and she will be 14 months. Should we get some kind of ear protection for her for shows and fireworks? Have any of you ever done that?
I never worried about it, but now you make me think that it should have crossed my mind!
It's not a bad idea, particularly if she is a bit nervous about loud noises. I've seen some little kids at WDW with those huge noise reducers like people wear at NASCAR races. You can't hear a thing through those!
When my son was little I used to stuff a cotton ball in his ears for parades. Disney parades are not noisy like a traditional parade - at a local parade it is the horns and sirens mostly that really leave my ears ringing, and to some extend the marching bands. It has been awhile since we went to WDW but I don't remember being concerned.
(I am sharing a hotel room with my parents and I packed earplugs for their snoring!)
I used earplugs last year for DD6, 4 and 7 months at the time. The older ones are afraid of the fireworks (even though they weren't that loud) so we were able to watch without them spazzing out. I knew by fireworks time, the baby would be sleep and didn't want her to be startled.
This year DD will be 18 months and I have no idea how she will take the noise. I do plan to bring them and will defintiely use if she has fallen asleep. If she hasn't, I will play it by ear! (no pun intended!)
I did not bring these last time, but have them on the list for this trip. My kids thought the shows were too loud, so the earplugs I think will make them more enjoyable. I got ones that are orange and spongy so that can fit in small ears. The came in a box of about 20 from Walmart.
When we visited two years ago, my DGS (6) hated the noise of fireworks and other loud noises, so we knew we had to do something so he would enjoy everything. My DGD (3) didn't like the loud noises either. I read lots of packages to try to see which would be the best earplugs. I eventually brought three types. One was a little blue twisty thing with a neck cord, and it worked very well, but I don't remember the name. The second type was called Leight Sleepers. They are soft pink and yellow foam cylinders which you compress to put in their ears. They even came with a little pill bottle size carrier. They were reusable but not as durable as the first kind. The third was made of wax and was called Mack's pillow soft earplugs. They weren't as easy to use, but they are waterproof and are recommended for use if your child has tubes in their ears or is susceptible to swimmer's ear. They form a seal over the opening to the ear. I wouldn't recommend them for noise, but both the others were effective and fairly easy to use. I think I bought all of them at Wal-Mart or a drug store. It is better to have them and not need them than the reverse! I will be taking earplugs again when we go back in May, although the kids aren't quite as allergic to noise now. Have a wonderful trip.
I honestly don't think you'll need earplugs. They play music during the fireworks and the fireworks aren't nearly as loud as anything I've heard on the 4th of July. Your girls will definately enjoy the music. Have fun!
